KeymasterNow time for Noerthern Irealnd to changeThe law in Northern Ireland dates back to 1861. It makes abortion illegal in almost every circumstance – even in cases of rape or fatal foetal abnormalities. It forces hundreds to travel every year to other parts of the UK for vital abortion services, and many others go online to buy abortion pills, risking prosecution for doing so. Northern Ireland will be the only place in the UK and Ireland – and most of Europe – where terminations are outlawed apart from in the most exceptional circumstances.

Keymaster66% in a 64% turn-out vote in Ireland for a relaxation of the anti-abortion laws. Only one county vote against. The result certainly doesn't make the country in any way a liberal country …still illegal after 12 weeks (with exceptions such as rape and medical conditions)

KeymasterAn interesting bio of former PM of Israel Barakhttps://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/may/25/ehud-barak-on-the-crisis-in-israel-netanyahu-has-to-resign
Quote:Barak is open about how working on this memoir (with Ned Temko), forced a level of introspection he had not previously engaged in, how it made him see, in “a very alive, vivid and sometimes painful way certain discrepancies between the ideal and its implementation. For example, the communist ideal of everyone gives whatever he can and gets whatever he needs.” Human nature, he now thinks, doesn’t really work like that. There was a specific incident when some Yemeni Jews, airlifted into Israel, came to work on the kibbutz. It turned out they were only hired hands and not given an equal share in the produce. Barak, then about 11, was picking carrots alongside them when he looked up and saw one of the men supervising their work, “like a kibbutznik turned plantation owner”. So some were more equal than others? “Yah, yah,” he says now, “and we were. We were more equal than they.”alanjjohnstone
KeymasterYou make a good point…My friend psychiatric nurse also pointed out to me that, the US, The USSR and the UK each had a different definition of what schizophrenia actually was, and the reason was pretty much political ones. It would be as if three countries defined measles as different causes and different symptoms with different treatments. We do have now what it described as the medicalization of social problems with umpteen new disorders being identified.

KeymasterAs Paddy is reticent and reluctant to engage on this forum (something i frown upon), i take the liberty of posting his response to the criticism of the topic. In doing so, i recall back in 2005 Paddy was given a simple remit to do a Make Poverty History talk in Edinburgh and took us by all surprise by raising the topic to a new higher level that we expected. I suggest we await what he and Lorna say before passing judgement.
Quote:It seems that one or two members on the Forum and Facebook, of which I am not a member, have gone into gobshite overdrive mode over the subject of the advertised Fircroft talk on intersectionality. First, let's be clear folks, intersectionality doesn't mean what you think it means, as you would know if you bothered to look it up. Second, the Party should encourage the free exploration of ideas – and most members actually do this, and Fircroft certainly does – so those involved do not represent the majority by their frankly rather insulting posts. Let's have an interesting debate and not prejudge it with knee-jerk reflexes and ad hominems, people. That way some of us might learn something.Paddyalanjjohnstone
KeymasterI got taught French at school and i agree with the comment the method was flawed. It was based on written grammar rather than speaking the language, Geez, at the time i don't know what a past an present participle is in English was much less in French….and who cared for the gender of the noun. We all know that pronunciation depends on context … if we are at the harbour…and i talk of a sheep…i think people will know i mean ship…The Two Ronnies succeed in highlighting that with fork handles sketchesI have travelled a lot and i live in two foreign nations. I can survive and i can get around with a very limited vocabulary and plenty of sign language gesturingFluency though means being able to have conversations and exchanges at an abstract and complex level ….such as discussing socialism and politics.Strange though…no many are replying to the other regret of mine….no music skills…i do know a couple of members who took up the saxophone in later life…i wonder why that instrument is chosen

KeymasterIsrael’s supreme court has ruled in favour of demolishing a Bedouin village in the occupied West Bank.It found “no reason to intervene in the decision of the minister of defence to implement the demolition orders issued against the illegal structures in Khan al-Ahmar”.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khan_al-Ahmar The residents would be relocated elsewhere, it added, in a move critics say amounts to forcible transfer. The village was built without the relevant building permits. Such permits are nearly impossible to obtain for Palestinians in Israeli-controlled areas of the West Bank.Earlier on Thursday, Israel’s defence minister, Avigdor Lieberman, announced 2,500 new settlement units in the West Bank. All settlements are considered illegal under international law.https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/may/25/israel-court-approves-razing-khan-al-ahmar-bedouin-village

KeymasterHere is the link to the NS articlehttps://www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk/2018/03/combat-left-anti-semitism-corbynism-must-change-way-it-sees-world
Quote:it is only Jews who are suspected of secretly controlling the world. He obviously not met Orangemen who will tell you it is the Jesuit Order that run the world and i heard this stated quite clearly and very often in Edinburgh at the Mound in my youth But we ourselves have endeavoured to point out that it is not the financiers and banksters that control the world but the root cause is the extraction of surplus value (albeit a portion of that goes to pay the interest of banks and rent of land-owners) but we implicate the complicity of the industrialist as a parasite as well, and deny it his capital is constructive and integral to production. On re-reading the article i think it score some important point that Cook may well not fully understand how sectionalising capital is anti-Marxist.
Quote:The roots of such “personalised critiques” of capitalism can be traced back to vulgar understandings of Marx’s so-called “labour theory of value”I think Darren Redstar also pointed out on another thread one of the NS articles claims
Quote:The inordinate focus on the crimes of Israel within the British left – far outweighing the attention given to the chemical slaughter currently inflicted by Bashar al-Assad for exampleDarren suggests we gave the Russians a free get-out-of-jail card by not allotting blame to them as much as we do the US/UKOther than that i think Cook does a good job exposing double-standards
