KeymasterI stopped contributing to this thread as i believe it had said all that needed to be said. In the intervening period, numerous articles has cropped up to confirm what i believe a rational planned society would implement concerning food production and animal welfare but i declined to post.We have never sought popularity over principle and despite many members own reservations i now personally believe it is time to call-out our dietary choices, and place planet before party. This latest research, the biggest analysis to date cannot go without mentioning.https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/may/31/avoiding-meat-and-dairy-is-single-biggest-way-to-reduce-your-impact-on-earthAvoiding meat and dairy products is the single biggest way to reduce your environmental impact on the planet, according to the scientists behind the most comprehensive analysis to date of the damage farming does to the planet. The new research shows that without meat and dairy consumption, global farmland use could be reduced by more than 75% – an area equivalent to the US, China, European Union and Australia combined – and still feed the world. Loss of wild areas to agriculture is the leading cause of the current mass extinction of wildlife. While meat and dairy provide just 18% of calories and 37% of protein, it uses the vast majority – 83% – of farmland and produces 60% of agriculture’s greenhouse gas emissions. Scientists also found that even the very lowest impact meat and dairy products still cause much more environmental harm than the least sustainable vegetable and cereal growing.“Converting grass into meat is like converting coal to energy. It comes with an immense cost in emissions” For those of us who still feel reluctant to commit the Party to endorsing a vegan/vegetarian future, there is one silver lining in this article.Dr Peter Alexander, at the University of Edinburgh, UK, noted: “There may be environmental benefits, eg for biodiversity, from sustainably managed grazing and increasing animal product consumption may improve nutrition for some of the poorest globally. My personal opinion is we should interpret these results not as the need to become vegan overnight, but rather to moderate our meat consumption.”Coal will remain in the hole, oil stay in the soil, and meat will off the menu

Keymasterhttp://www.bbc.com/news/business-44306941EU leaders have a "gun held to their head" over the threat of US tariffs on steel imports, the head of trade body UK Steel has warned. Gareth Stace said the EU needed to impose safeguards to curb Chinese steel once destined for the US that will now be heading to Europe. "About 20 million tonnes of Chinese steel would need to "find a new home to go to and, because we are a free and open market here in the UK/the EU, it'll come here, we believe, and therefore further damage our sector – not only from the direct impact of tariffs in the US but the surge of steel coming here." The EU has already said it will respond by imposing tariffs on US products such as motorcycles and jeans.

KeymasterIt appears to be a personal contact so you'd need to comradely contact the poster by PM for further details and hope he is one of those on Libcom who doesn't hold a hostility clause against us in the SPGB As for the earlier query on staples, i looked at a few websites and found nothing forbidding thosehttp://sendbookstoprisoners.co.uk/general-rules-for-delivery-of-books-to-prisoners/

KeymasterMy way of thinking is that a hinterland may well remain undeveloped but urbanisation has proletarianised a mostly migrant population from the rural areas. And they are now becoming the most populous partsI think St Petersburg experienced the same situation with peasants moving to the city to work in the giant Kirov works. As we always said, not every part of the planet requires to become capitalist …only the economically and politically dominant regions…

Keymasterhttp://www.dw.com/en/israel-russia-team-up-to-keep-iran-out-of-syria-border-region/a-43979590
Quote:Israeli media reported this week that Israel and Russia have reached an agreement that allows Syrian government troops under President Bashar Assad to return to the Golan Heights border region, as long as the Russians guarantee no Iranian or Hezbollah troops will be there. Israel's government has increasingly voiced concerned about Iran's presence in Syria in recent months and, since February, launched repeated airstrikes against Iranian military targets in the country…Russia is hoping to keep the two countries from waging a full-blown proxy war in Syria, explained Yossi Mekelberg, an international relations professor at Regent's University London and research fellow at the Chatham House think tank. "The Russians would not like to see Syria become a battlefield between Israel and Iran. It diverts from Russian interests," he told DW. "The Russians are not great friends with Iran. They have a common interest with the Iranians to keep Assad in power, but that's about it."alanjjohnstone
KeymasterQuote:but Jewish is a religious concept, it is not a racial or ethnic conception,Under the British legal system, Jewish people are legally classed as a race just as people of the Sikh faith are also defined as such, Marcos, in the UK anti-discrimination legislation.I don't know about other countries which use religion as a description of race.

KeymasterWith all due respect, ALB, i'm not really interested in the Oxford Dictionary says but what Paddy and Lorna have to tell us.I'm willing to wait to hear what they have to say before i agree or disagree. Their intro is a deliberate teaser and his posting a purposefully provocative. Paddy's usual style, i would tentatively suggest.I'm reluctant to pre-judge their talk ….surely we should wait until its over and decide if they addressed our concerns and satisfied our apparent discomfort with the concept. …Maybe we will go away with a little bit more to think about…

KeymasterI read this
Quote:Conservative prime minister John Howard, in office at the time of the report's publication, dismissed judge Sir Ronald Wilson's call for a formal apology to be issued, rejected the idea that Aborigines had been the victims of genocide and complained of an "Aboriginal guilt industry", an attitude still shared by some, typically in rural parts.https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/australasia/national-sorry-day-australia-aborigines-stolen-generation-healing-reconciliation-a8368486.htmlIf the words Jew and Holocaust were substituted, then he would be making a criminal statement

Keymaster"He says 'let's have an iteresting debate' but sends his message via a third party! "(my emph)Just to be clear, he sent no-one to relay his message. I took it upon myself to post his Spintcom message. I'm not even aware if Paddy knows if his Spintcom message was pasted to this forum I am fully in accord with Gnome's disapproval that there are a number of members and even party position office-holders who disdain from visiting this forum. It should be part of their remit as a committee memberI also will add, i am disappointed by those members who are on the net who fail to visit the blog on a regular basis and who decline to offer any comment to the posts….one of those days i'm going to post some outrageous scurrilous blog, maybe a naked selfie, just to check how long it takes members to react to it…so be warned…and hopefully that threat alone will be suffice in raising our blog traffic figure
