Eastern North Carolina has about 4,000 storage pools of pig feces, urine and blood as a result of the hog industry, where 9m pigs produce over 10bn gallons of waste annually in the state. When the waste lagoons reach capacity, excess waste is sprayed on to nearby fields. In 2000, Smithfield Foods agreed with state officials in North Carolina to finance research to find and install alternatives to the waste lagoons and spraying systems, but none were deemed economically feasible.But now – instead of implementing safer waste systems – Smithfield Foods is pushing to use the hog waste lagoons to collect, transport and sell the methane gas they produce. That terrifies many local people and environmental activists who see it as seeking to profit from an ecological problem rather than fix it.

The product, called biogas, is being proposed by a $500m joint venture between Smithfield Foods and Dominion Energy, Align RNG, as a solution to the hog waste pollution problems plaguing North Carolina, but residents and environmental organizers are raising concerns that the project will worsen the problem.
The Grady Road Project includes trapping methane gas at 19 industrial hog waste sites in Duplin and Sampson counties in North Carolina, where over 30 miles of pipelines will be constructed to a central processing facility and distributed through existing natural gas pipelines. Duplin and Sampson counties are the top-hog producing counties in the US. The project is one of several biogas proposals being pushed by Smithfield and Dominion Energy.“The biogas is a false solution,” said Naemma Muhammad, a community organizer and resident of Duplin county. “It doesn’t solve the problems … We don’t need anything to encourage this industry to continue business as usual.”

LB, the worse thing is a good conspiracy theory has a basis in some half-truths and it is true that a number of authoritarian regimes are using the pretext of the pandemic to impose draconian controls over protests and demonstrations.
We witnessed that even our own members are prone to accepting the narrative that the government is exercising too much policing power, relative to the threat of the spread.
There is also the unintended consequences of the lock-downs and social distancing and quarantines…the mental health problems, the family abuse rise, the economic pain, etc.
The government have expended far less resources in minimalising those side-effects of policy and this exacerbates peoples perception of what the government’s priorities are.
Apart from the very politically prejudiced, we need to be receptive to peoples lack of confidence in the government and provide an answer for genuine concern and unease.

It may be anecdotal but i recall hearing of a multi-party conference which included the SLP but another party had laid the Stars and Stripes on the ground at the entrance so it meant walking over it and no doubt wiping your feet on it. The SLP delegation declined and departed.

At the Mound in Edinburgh when i first joined during the 70s there was an elderly lone SLPer who attended the outdoor meetings. I should have been more attentive to his conversations.
Personally i think De Leon’s ‘sword and shield’ analogy of the political and the industrial organisation of the working class is a good one, i’m even amenable to the switching of what is the sword and what is the shield depending on the situation.

The more i think about it, the more i believe we have an opportunity to directly link the pandemic’s problems to capitalism and offer world socialism as an alternative.
We could be the first out of the starting gates with a something substantial on the pandemic.
How capitalism exacerbates the problems of it, how some of the advisable approaches to contain it expresses the socialist idea of altruism and mutual self-interest, how some of the solutions would be even more effective with a socialist administration, and why socialism offers a scenario of future less risk of another pandemic of this scale.
