Since any label means something is what it’s labelled, then North Korea (the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) must be a democracy?
How a society under free-access socialism/communism would be run isn’t a strange question and how people would want it to run isn’t an answer.
People are inherently greedy, it’s why our society is run by capitalists and the greediest get to the top. It’s why there’s so much corruption in government, why the skilled engineer demands more than the labourer sweeping the floor and why you’ll try and sell your car for as much as you can get and not what it’s actually worth. You can’t remove those traits by social engineering and wishful thinking.
The average worker isn’t bothered about “enlightened self-interest”, they’re looking for as much as they can get for their labour and that’s been the position for centuries. The engineer is no more likely to share what he has with a labourer than a millionaire with the engineer.
What were the recent junior doctors and train drivers strikes about? A classless, moneyless society or more pay? It’s not that a free-access society would break down at the first opportunity, it’s that it would never get off the ground in the first place. It’s only a good idea if I can control the distribution. 🙂
Of course many people won’t work if they can live for free. If you’re currently working and I said I’ll give you what you can now buy with your wage for free, why would would you want to drag yourself off to work every day? And if you’re on benefits you’re already living for free.
It’s not just me that is objecting, it’s the whole of society. Why not have a pamphlet explaining why for 80 years the workers have not elected one SPGB member to parliament? Or, why the SPGB has only 300 members out of millions of workers? Did you know that The Monster Raving Loony Party has more members than the SPGB? These aren’t disparaging remarks, they’re facts and when you can answer them maybe you’ll start thinking for yourself instead of someone else having to do it for you.
