ParticipantWell of course the mechanisms are there.
The RATIONAL is all in place to see. But the irrational still holds sway. And if leaflets, which one can peruse at leisure in one’s home, make no difference, then what hope or time given in trying to explain to busy “rat-race” workers the ins and outs of socialist history and the differences between us and the Bolshevik Left etc?
A beer over the head is the likely response.Thomas_More
ParticipantBut that’s my point. Why couldn’t they vote for socialism? Because they didn’t, and that’s what needs looking at.
Because, if reason is all it takes, and most people are rational, then our 100,000 leaflets should rationally produce 100,000 socialists.
But they persist in voting irrationally, even when they know of our existence.-

ParticipantYes, but they didn’t. They all voted for more of the same.

ParticipantBy dread i mean having to face that the responsibility is theirs and cannot be left to politicians.
In fact, i have had two people tell me, after reading the Standard, that socialism is evil.
Everyone i’ve given the Standard to has rejected our message.

ParticipantJust being a realist based on my experience of even trying to begin talk of socialism.

ParticipantWe can repeat our case until we’re blue in the face. If knowing about us was enough, they’d become socialists. But they are so immured in their helplessness that they do indeed dread the obligation to do anything other than give to charities and vote for leaders to take on the burden.
If reason was enough, we should get nearly 100% positive response from our election leaflets. But we’ll get practically zero.

ParticipantWell no, but that attitude also makes them turn away in dread from the very responsibility they need to take for making socialism. They just don’t want to hear it.
Btw, its a myth that ostriches do that.

ParticipantAnd here’s a look on the bright side too: Suddenly, children’s books are appearing in Latin!
All the Harry Potters, Alice in Wonderland are now joining the list with Pooh and Asterix.
As Miranda would say, “What’s happening?”

ParticipantHow does this tally with not expecting Russia to withdraw?

ParticipantVery interesting.

ParticipantSo ALB is wrong when he says a deal will be reached, leaving Russia its war gains?
Thomas_More
ParticipantBut couldn’t they keep the bulk of Ukraine and its minerals by agreeing with Putin to partition, leaving him the east and coast he has annexed?

ParticipantThey are also against warmongering against Russia.
Surely a right winger for peace is better than a left winger for war?Thomas_More

In France, Belgium and Switzerland, supermarket foyers have racks of French-language history-themed comic books. Here too, in the 1970s, these were appearing in English, as well as toys. In the Anglophone world all these history-themed comics and toys (excepting the Asterix books) disappeared at a stroke when the stupid Star Wars movie came out, and were replaced with fantasy. -
