The Highlanders would never have thought of themselves as Scottish, nor as a nation, but as children of a clan. Like the Japanese used to.
And those who thought of themselves as “Scottish” hated and despised the Highlanders as “savages”, to be got rid of. The same way the American colonials looked at the natives. So, like all nationalism, Scottish nationalism is also garbage.But the Lowland Gaels would have been pushed north quite quickly I think, Alan, by the English (Saxon) and Norman settlers.
Robert the Bruce, the great Scottish hero, was in fact Robert de Bruys, a Norman.
I remember Alf Garnett trying to prove a racist point about blood by arguing you can’t give a Jew Catholic blood or vice versa.
Could be Britons (Welsh), since some British (Welsh) tribes occupied the north too.
I don’t know why U.K. nationals are called Britons by the media unless they are Welsh. The term British cannot be used politically until after 1707. Before then it was applied specifically and correctly to the Welsh and Cornish alone.

Re: Pol Pot, Mao, etc. The Taipings were similar in their lethality. Mixing a semi-Christian fanaticism with their peasant ardour and the cult-like hero-worship we see in Maoist sects, they executed homosexuals and other minorities and deified their leaders.
Well said, Alan. Chinese Leninists are full of “national liberation”, unless you are Formosan, Vietnamese, Tibetan, Uighur, etc. That’s why they supported Pol Pot (liberate people from life!) Idi Amin, and, finally Nixon and Thatcher.
I cannot recommend enough the superb book, A TRAGIC LIBERATION, whose author I will give here in a moment.Lenin didn’t give a fig about his “national liberation” balderdash unless it suited him and the “Communist” Party.
