Damn you L Bird, don't you dare give up now ! I/We ( I assume I'm not the only one ) have stuck it out for 27 pages, in the hope of learning something new. There has been plenty of " chest thumping " " bull.roaring "  and trolling, but not much constructive commentary. We know our brains are wired up differently and that is why some of us struggle with maths, or, as in my case, spelling. Some of us make poor communicators and perhaps that is what we are witnessing here.                                                                          " Is this it Saruman? Is this all you have to offer?"

.  Has the N. E. group got the ability to set up it's own site, where members and supporters can communicate with each other, whenever   they wanted, ie. outside of meeting times/dates and discuss whatever they wanted to, without bieng silenced ?

These circumstances seem to fit the criteria for war.It only remains to be seen which side China favours.  Should China occupy the Diaoyu (china) / Senkaku ( japan) islands, it might wellbe mindful to take heed of british govt. advise. Apply sticky tape to all windows, because flying glass can maim. Store water in containers. Remove an internal door and prop it ag.ainst the stair wall. The whole family should shelter under this door. Keep a flash lamp handy. Do not venture outside till you hear the" all clear." Oh, and one last thought, singing songs like," row, row, row your boat" and "ten green bottles," might help pass the time and keepmoral high.

Vin, if you go to the opening post (#1) and open the link to the Times article, just below the picture, there is this. "Last updated 10.50a.m. July 3rd.  * this article has been corrected." I do not subscribe to the Times, therefore I can not say what the correction is, but if it is a direct result of your letter, then it is bad form if you recieve no acknowledgement.

In 1974, the common market adopted a" Resolution on the right of reply [res. (74) 26].You could always inform the Times, you wish to exercise that right !

Nevertheless it is good publicity for the S.P.G.B. from an unexpected source. Perhaps you could ask the teachers union if you can send speakers to clarify the S.P.G.B. position, rather than letting some misguiding wannabe writer scribble about the S.P.G.B. with his poisoned pen, unopposed.

Hi Vin, good to see you beavering away, as usual.I tried logging onto that site several times, but failed. This topic is way above my "pay grade" but I still have a couple of questions you might ask for me.  Quote "there aren't any capitalists anymore. The surplus is being paid to you."So why do we need money? Secondly, one of the many things mankind needs is a cure for ALL cancers. Not money making treatments, but a real "one stop" cure. We need as many people as necessary working on that cure, with whatever resources they need.If workers are being paid ALL the surplus, why do we not have the manpower and resources to effect a cancer cure? And if Bill Gates is not a capitalist, what is he and where does he get this wealth, which is not a surplus?

Perhaps one day Mr. Blair will stand in the United Nations Court of Justice, place his hand on his roman-catholic bible and swearan oath of truth before his roman-catholic god and tell the world what part he had to play in the murder of so many people.

Attack who you want, it will not yield one more new member. Now is the time to consolidate those 6838 votes. Send letters to the local press, thanking those farsighted citizens who voted for the SPGB. Let them know that the SPGB are at hand all of the time, not just when votes are needed.

Vin, the economic interests of our class is the hub of socialism, after that, everything else simply falls into place But if the case for socialism is not one of selfishness, that of capitalism certainly is.So how do we present the case for socialism to those workers who are, "doing all right?"

So, the Prime Minister of Britain recons this is a christian country. By Britain I assume he means the United Kingdom.  Well, let's see what the 2011 census reveals. People who said they were christian:

England…………..31,479,876……….59.4%Wales ………………1,763,299…………57.6%Scotland……………2,850,199…………53.8%N. Ireland…………..1,490,588…………82.3%No religion………….16,221,509………25.7%Total population….63,182,178 Taking these figures as they stand, the prime minister might have a point, but practicing christians attend church and only6% of the U.K. population, some 3,790,930  attend church. Hardly a christian country, I would say!

Had to check the O.P. Thought for a minute, I had logged onto the wrong topic, and this was, "The Long Awaited Materialism Thread." Vin, sorry for not replying sooner, but for the last few days, here in sunny Seaham, the temperature has been a heady 9c. andthe garden beckoned. You said that slavery was "logical" and "morally right," in it's day.   Well, perhaps not from the side the slaves looked from! I see no problem in accepting all three ( morality, cold logic and survival of our species)I started out on the road to Socialism, by being appalled at the dire need of many fellow humans. The S.P.G.B. taught (and stillteaches) the cold logic and I am well awair of the climatic threat to our very existence I have no need to see Marx's face in the tea-leaves at the bottom of a cup, or the moss growing on a wall, to think of myself as a socialist. p.s  thanks for the link, will read it tonight while enjoying a bells (no single malt for me)

The case for socialism is based upon the economic interests of the working class Vin, would you say that case for Socialism as presented by the S.P.G.B. is based on selfishness, as in:  What is in it for me, my genes, my family. This is not a trick question, Vin.

Mike,    I struggled with the wording. In fact I hardly left the starting block, in that I had to look up the meaning of the word, egregious (spelt with one g ) egregious (the free dictionary) :

    (1)  outstandingly bad; flagrant(2) [ antiquated]  distinguished; eminent I never knew that Herr Engles was so anti-british. This is the same britain that harboured him and Marx, when they were houndedout of europe. It would seem that matter can be created out of "nothing," from "quantum vacuum fluctuations."  So when we say there was nothing before the Big Bang, perhaps we use the wrong word. And just to confound it all, the closing line from an article in the New Scientist (physics & maths) is :

" So if the Large Hadron Collider confirms that the Higgs exists, it will mean all reality is virtual."
