Not at all. I meant the top tier of English/Welgish(England & Wales)/British football.

Indeed. I read in a history book that in the 1930’s, premiership footballers were paid (adjusted for inflation) the same wages as skilled factory workers.

MooParticipant‘Utterly depressing to think about it.’
I often think of these two quotes:
‘Do you find it overwhelming that we live in a genuine nightmarish dystopia, but everyone acts like it’s normal?’
and:
‘The best way to stop prisoners escaping is if they don’t know they’re in prison.’

Some team sports are similar to battles, with the managers as commanders & the team-members as soldiers. Chess also fits in well with that analogy.
It’s hard to imagine people taking-up sport professionally in socialism; for example, why would someone dedicate their life to being the world’s greatest runner in a world based on co-operation instead of competition?
It’s much easier to imagine people just playing games for fun in socialism (as opposed to there being contests).

It was usually a rectangular area surrounded by stones with carved symbols (petroglyphs).
“The batey was the area in which batey events (e.g. ceremonies, the ball game, etc.) took place. The batey ceremony (also known as batu) can be viewed from some historical accounts as more of a judicial contest rather than a game. Because historical accounts of the game and court space come from (mostly Spanish) European explorers, the true nature, history, and function of the batey is still contested. Neighbouring tribes may have used batey matches to resolve differences without warfare.” SOURCE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batey_(game)

You’d get an immediate red card (& be booed off the pitch) if you did any rugby moves in football. As for boxing, Muhammad Ali couldn’t speak for the last years of his life due to being so brain-damaged.
‘Or offside.’
My knee-jerk reaction to that was: you can’t get rid of the off-side rule! But, actually, it would mean a lot more goals, so that’s a good idea. VAR is good (as long as it ONLY benefits the teams I support). đ

Violent sports such as rugby & boxing almost definitely won’t exist in socialism. It’s hard to imagine trophies existing in socialism because some people would like to steal them, so they would have to be guarded, so we’re talking about security guards in a socialist society (which doesn’t sound right).
I’m a casual football fan, but it’s hard to imagine socialist football where the fans don’t give the referee & linesmen/women a hard time, and fans of arch-rival teams (e.g. Celtic & Rangers) are nice to each other.
MooParticipantFrom the above song (that Paula likes so much): ‘I dreamed I saw a mighty room,
The room was full of [world leaders].
And the paper they were signing said,
They’d never fight again.’That could only happen in a dream. While its a lovely song, it shows how effective capitalist propaganda is, because it assumes wars are caused by mad world leaders, and also, it’s the ‘plebs’ who do the fighting, not world leaders. Finally, it was obviously written a long time ago, because the world leaders are all men.
MooParticipantThanks for the very interesting historical information, ALB.

I’m confused. Wasn’t Ukraine part of the USSR at that time?
MooParticipantThe Left believe that weak countries which defy imperialism from the powerful ones are doing so because they want to help their people. The reality is they want to support their OWN capitalist class at the expense of the capitalist class of the powerful, imperialist country.
MooParticipantFair enough. Another reason to get rid of capitalism: copyright laws!
MooParticipantThere’s nothing make-believe about social ownership and social control for social purposes (i.e. social-ism).
To which group of Leninists to you belong, Lizzie?

What you wrote about Geordies is so offensive, I can’t believe it was written by a fellow socialist!
