For anyone who thinks capitalism and the profit motive are “great”, this stunningly good documentary will shake their core beliefs to the very core. I guarantee that. It will make you see red, witnessing how decisions actually get to be made under this rotten system
Ralph Nade has written several books on the airline industry and the lack of safety.
He has interviewed several engineers who worked for Boeing and were fired because they complained about the lack of safety and the use of low-quality parts to reduce costs and increase profits. Workers are exhausted due to the pressure and long hours to produce the aeroplanes, and motivate them to commit mistakes on the assembly line.
They were saying that many new aeroplanes can only last several years of flying, but the parts will fail while they are flying, and aeroplanes will crash and kill thousands of passengers; the executives knew about these problems, and government agencies knew about them, but they covered up their crimes.
Courts have dismissed several cases, and the lawyers have presented solid evidence in court, but despite that, their cases have been dismissed, saving billions of dollars to the airline industry
Boeing is not the only airliners which has been under safety escrutinity also airbus has been included
Boeing aeroplanes have structural weaknesses, wing malfunctions, wiring problems, software malfunctions, gasoline tanks ( wings ) malfunction, and cabin problems.

What was remarkable about the film was how it showed that, every time Boeing was called out for being negligent, there was a lot of huffing and puffing by the lawmakers, followed by a mild slap on the wrist and then things just went back to normal. The pressure to “produce product” and make money led to still more mistakes
One CEO was replaced by another promising a fresh start and to take seriously what the workforce was telling the management, but it never happened. There was a succession of CEOs at Boeing, each raking in millions, even hundreds of millions of dollars.
The expression on the face of one of them who was being grilled at a hearing was priceless. He was asked to justify the huge pay increase he awarded himself while the reputation of Boeing was in tatters, and he couldn’t.
In my opinion, this is one of the best documentaries I have ever seen on the stupidity and sheer inhumanity of the profit system. It would be well worth seeing. Perhaps the SPGB could revive the old practice of having film nights followed by discussion. This film would be an excellent candidate for that
Thanks, robbo203, for recommending the documentary, which I watched last night. It’s very clear in demonstrating how the profit motive overrules safety considerations, isn’t it? I’ll write about it for the next Proper Gander article in the Standard.
You should read Ralph Nader’s book and make an SS review; he has covered more than the film, and he has been involved in product liability and product safety for several years.
He knows the history of the FAA pretty well; he said that the FAA is only an agency of Boeing and the commercial airliners and used to cover their tracks and criminality.
This issue shows the character of the so-called justice system, which is only an agency of the capitalist state to defend the legal interests of the capitalist class. I told that a long time ago to a constitutional law professor, and I told him that I can clean my butt with all the capitalist constitutions and all the national flags.
They only pass a safety law when hundreds of human beings are killed, or when the evidence is very obvious to the public; they are trying to avoid product liability lawsuits, and they are liable for many accidents and deaths, but they have an army of lawyers that small law firms can not afford to continue their cases; it is the same situation of Monsanto who have killed many peasants but defend lawyers can not continue their case due to the high cost of the legal proceedings
Ralph Nader has interviewed several engineers and managers of Boeing on his Podcast program, and what they have described is horrible; another part that is not covered by the film is that workers are under enormous pressure and stress, and several of them have committed suicide, and some have filed lawsuits for infliction of emotional distress.

The FAA knew or knows about the risks of all these planes, and they know that thousands of human beings are going to die and have died. They are just a bunch of criminals and gangsters wearing suits and ties

This world is so bizarre that I read some workers saying that it is cheaper to kill some human beings than to affect the profits of the corporations, and some use the expression “we” like they own a corporation; we do not even own a small piece of land in the cemetery. Those corporations have killed thousands of human beings, and their CEO and investors are living like kings, walking free and laughing to the bank
