Is this magazine similar to Private eye?

I hope this is followed up by a public show of support: demonstrations in favour of free speech rather than calls for some sort of state clamp down.  The main beneficiaries, I fear, will be the Front National…

Yes, but much cruder. Not like the BBC who are so polite that they were referring to him this evening as "the prophet" mohammed.

Very sage analysis from the usually very well informed Juan Cole:http://www.juancole.com/2015/01/sharpening-contradictions-satirists.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook

    Quote:
Al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia, then led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, deployed this sort of polarization strategy successfully in Iraq, constantly attacking Shiites and their holy symbols, and provoking the ethnic cleansing of a million Sunnis from Baghdad. The polarization proceeded, with the help of various incarnations of Daesh (Arabic for ISIL or ISIS, which descends from al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia). And in the end, the brutal and genocidal strategy worked, such that Daesh was able to encompass all of Sunni Arab Iraq, which had suffered so many Shiite reprisals that they sought the umbrella of the very group that had deliberately and systematically provoked the Shiites.

I was heartened by the pictures of crowds of solidarity at Place de la Revolution, hopefully these crowds can hold the line and see off any NF attempt to exploit the Islamist bifurcation strategy.

    Quote:
We have a model for response to terrorist provocation and attempts at sharpening the contradictions. It is Norway after Anders Behring Breivik committed mass murder of Norwegian leftists for being soft on Islam. The Norwegian government launched no war on terror. They tried Breivik in court as a common criminal. They remained committed to their admirable modern Norwegian values.

    and

    Quote:
“Sharpening the contradictions” is the strategy of sociopaths and totalitarians, aimed at unmooring people from their ordinary insouciance and preying on them, mobilizing their energies and wealth for the perverted purposes of a self-styled great leader.

Not sure about that but the State is certainly mightier than the Kalashnikov as those wielding one are about to find out.

A few people are pointing out the US drone bombings of Yemen have killed as many people as the Charlie Hebdo attack in France but the outcry has been less.

Here's what the Council of ex-Muslims of Britain has to say about this:http://ex-muslim.org.uk/2015/01/after-the-charlie-hebdo-massacre-support-those-fighting-the-religious-right/Here's a quote from their statement:

    Quote:
What is needed is a straightforward analysis of the political nature of armed Islamists: they are an extreme-Right political force, working under the guise of religion and they aim at political power. They should be combated by political means and mass mobilisation, not by giving extra privileges to any religion.

The US government is the  Grammy winner of all the killing perpetrated  around the world. In Iraq more journalists were killed than the ones in France. Aljazeera was bombarded, and the Palestine hotel full of journalists was also bombarded.

War and poverty creates heroes, martyrs, and saints. Peace and prosperity negates heroes, martyrs, and saints.Heroes, martyrs, and saints are all human sacrifices. Now that there is "war on terror", we will be seeing more of them.It makes me wonder, do you?I think heroes, martryrs, and saints can be attributed to this concept callled God, I mean, if you believe that God is on your side wouldn't you feel brave too?sardaan Ordinarian

What is an "ordinarian"? Is it some kind of priest?

In just a few days my facebook has morphed from plenty of 'Je suis Charlie' to 'anti imperialist' justification and whattaboutery, where the religious background of one of the murdered policemen is interpreted as meaning he had to be opposed to Charlie Hebdo but died defending it, ( a rather racist assumption) and will self comments a couple of years ago in which he questioned whether it was right to print the Mohamed cartoons "the test I apply to something to see whether it truly is satire derives from H. L. Mencken's definition of good journalism: It should ‘afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.’ The trouble with a lot of so-called ‘satire’ directed against religiously motivated extremists is that it's not clear who it's afflicting, or who it's comforting." I think that self is wrong, unless free speech includes freedom to offend and even disgust it means nothing at all. Those happily quoting him do so in order to justify refusing to defend or support those butchered in Paris, because their idiot anti imperialism places them in the same camp as the murderers.

Here's another example of outrageous behaviour by Muslim opponents of free speech and a sign of what to expect if politicised islamists get control of political power:

    Quote:
Saudi blogger will be flogged in public todayRiyadh A liberal activist sentenced to jail and flogging in Saudi Arabia will receive the first 50 of 1,000 lashes today. Raif Badawi, who set up the Free Saudi Liberals website, was charged in June 2012 with offences including cybercrime, disobeying his father and apostasy. Last year he was given a 10-year jail term, fined 1 million rivals ($266,666) and ordered to receive 1,000 lashes after an earlier seven-year sentence with 600 lashes was deemed lenient.Amnesty International said that he would be whipped in front of the al-Jafali mosque in Jeddah after prayers. The remaining lashes will be administered on a weekly basis. (Reuters).{Times, 9 January)

No big press campaign against this  — no, "Je suis Raif Badawi" posters and slogans — but then Saudi Arabia is one of the Western capitalist bloc's allies and a lucrative market for their arms sales

I have just been having a discussion with vice. I had assumed that the self quote had been taken from a couple of years back. It seems that after the shooting, vice approached him for a comment, and he repeated his previous statement. Which is pretty amazing, if Charlie Hebdo don't count as genuine satire, and thus aren't covered by Selfs definition of free speech, are they somewhat to blame for their own murders?to be frank I am constantly surprised how low the anti imperialist left can sink.
