CEUTA, Spain (AP) — Tens of thousands of migrants who crossed into Spain’s tiny Ceuta territory returned voluntarily to Morocco on Friday, a day after the influx triggered chaos in the North African city and reignited the immigration debate in Europe and beyond. At least 57 migrants died on the journey.

Ceuta’s president put the number of migrants at 60,000, which was equivalent to 70% of the territory’s population. But most of them soon went back, the Spanish government said, after the sudden arrival of so many people sparked a humanitarian crisis.

Some migrants swam several miles through the sea and faced down authorities who tried to turn them back with water cannons, tear gas and warning shots. Those who died included some who drowned or were killed in a stampede to cross a breakwater barrier near a border checkpoint.

It seems that the majority of the 60,000 who entered Cueta returned to Morocco – 48,000. There has been some suggestion that this was a case of the Moroccan government wilfully playing political games by allowing this to happen to spite Spain becuase of the latter´s rapprochement with Algeria (Algeria supplies Spain with natural gas). Algeria is opposed to Morocco on the question of the Spanish Sahara (what is now called Western Sahara) and supports the Polisario Front there.

At any rate, it does seem to be the case that the border guards and police on the Moroccan side might have been instructed from above to be more lax in their approach to preventing this sort of incident. France and Italy have tightened up on movements between them and Spain. This is where the grim logic of nationalist thinking leads you to

A socialist world without borders couldn’t come too soon

Whatever has taken place, workers are in the middle of an inter-class dispute and bourgeois nationalism. This crisis is used by right wings government to close their borders and to spread xenophobia, anti communism, and nationalism. In Morocco, three European corporations, along with the local capitalist class, control all the natural resources

When all the right wing populists govnerments collapse in Latin America, the USA government will see a bigger wave of emigration than the one from Morocco trying to cross through the Mexican border. It might be similar to the movie Born in LA, when thousands of Mexicans crossed the border, and the military forces were not able to detain them

At least 99 people died Thursday and Friday during desperate attempts by tens of thousands of people attempting to swim from Morocco to the Spanish exclave of Ceuta in North Africa, and over 100 remain missing. Over 60,000 reached their destination during 24 hours, during which they were met with brutal violence by the Spanish military and a concerted campaign to force their return to poverty-stricken Morocco. The political establishment and media outlets across Europe erupted with furious denunciations of “invaders,” as they churned out far-right talking points about the “hybrid threat” posed by migrants attacking Europe.

“Witnesses and experts have suggested that an easing of controls by Morocco in the border area of Ceuta contributed to the recent mass influx of migrants into the Spanish enclave. Others are pointing the finger at American and Israeli involvement”.
