“A lot of these problems are potentially preventable: things like high blood pressure and smoking are still causing a massive burden of mortality and ill-health,” said Prof John Newton, director of health improvement at Public Health England and a collaborator on the project.

Globally, the leading cause of death is cardiovascular disease, with abnormal tissue growth including cancers in second place, and chronic respiratory conditions in third. Among cancer deaths, lung cancer was the most common cause.
The data revealed that our behaviour is our biggest threat to staying alive, with poor diet the greatest risk factor. Indeed, a bad diet was behind more than 19% of all deaths worldwide in 2017, and almost 70% of coronary heart disease deaths.
Experts say the latest findings reflect an accelerating shift away from deaths relating to infections and problems around birth and towards diseases such as cancer and diabetes.
Dr Christopher Murray, senior author of the research, said “People are free to change their diet but statistically we know you are very likely to eat what you ate when you were younger and what the people around you eat – so public policy can have a big influence through taxes and subsidies and other strategies,”

The elderly is a burden to capitalist society. Hence we are being made to toil for longer, cuts are being made to social services and care homes to the old …it will only get worse with the demographics changing, all those young fit working-age people getting fewer and fewer and the right wing placing bans on the newcomers from abroad supplementing them…Its a topic for another thread but our blog has covered many stories of the social abuse of the elderly, and euthanasia may well become a hidden policy in the NHS as many cliam the rationing of treatment is already taking place.

But many states are proud of their local languages, 22 official ones, which are guaranteed by the constitution so there are many language nationalisms in India
I recall the popularity in the past of universal languages like Esperanto (there were others but less common)
That seemed to have disappeared too with English becoming the lingua franca for many sections of the world’s populations and industries and professions
I believe more people speak English in India than Hindi, for example.

We have to bring a sense of urgency to the fact that socialism as the ONLY immediate solution by highlighting the risks and dangers that the Greens keep pointing out and are guilty of being complicit in. For the doomsters, why not agree with them and challenge them on their solutions, the timescale, the degree of effectiveness, the existence of loop-holes and get-out clauses and outright cheating. We accuse them of relying on the goodwill of governments and CEOs and not proposing genuine social change but a modified capitalist society but providing a palliative of cosmetic changes.
Maybe i’m pushing on an open-door, preaching to the converted, singing from the same hymn sheet. But where is this issue on our priority list for our campaigns?

On my web travels trawling for news for our blogs i invariably get caught up in debates with the over-populationists.
I am always surprised since they consider themselves the more progressive greenest of activists and advocates yet their understanding goes no further than accepting the concept of carrying capacity and that we need 2 or 3 planets because there are too many people on the world making too many demands upon resources. Despite their smugness about being vegan and compassion about wild-life, many demonstrate a deep misanthropy and reactionary social policies. I’m particularly contemptuous of those liberal anti-vaxxers.
They always tell me we must have population control to halt climate change …as if a Sudanese peasant has the same ecological footprint as an American corporation.
I end up accusing them of racist eugenic social engineering, with a logic that would promote euthanasia for the increasing elderly because we are living longer and infanticide because we have reduced the child mortality rates and that they should be demanding like ourselves one world one people to counteract declining populations in the developed world.
Not only do we have to give them a guilt trip….we need to shame them.
But okay, i’m open to hearing about more disarming tactics of persuausion

Perhaps a possible approach is to inform those Greens that they indeed will be proved correct about the possible apocalyptic scenario but it is not the capitalist ruling class to blame for the imminent end of civilisation, nor the government’s inactions but themselves for not understanding and not tackling the root cause. Clever enough to comprehend the physics and all the graphs and whatnot, but purposefully and painfully ignorant of what is staring them straight in the face – the need for a total system change a much-needed reboot of society since they greens offer just as the capitalist class does…business as usual

As i said when it comes to communicating our case, i don’t have the answer and don’t believe its an either/ or question. I keep saying we need group-think by all the members of our party. It is all about making our message heard above all the extraneous noise and that is our and always been our difficulty.
