Unless the footage we all saw of a Russian tank deliberately wheeling about and running over a civilian car was fake, I can believe whatever horror stories I am hearing.

That story is a typical example of the propaganda lies churned out by the Ukrainian authorities and confirms my view that you shouldn’t believe a word they say. Good thing, though, that there are people around prepared to expose this sort of thing.
Here’s another likely story.
It is a cliche, ALB, but truth is the first casualty of war.
We fully accept that there are atrocities and war crimes committed in a war. We fully admit war is brutal and dehumanising.
Yes, war can bring out the best in people, the empathy and solidarity but it also brings out the worse, cruelty and callousness.
People don’t like to think of themselves as pawns in a power struggle but that is what they are.
This is why we oppose capitalism the harbinger of inhumanity.
Sentimental sympathy and sorrow, won’t end wars.
And to block Tacos and Burritos against Spain when they wanted to get out of the Iraq coalition, the Tacos are from Mexico and the Burritos are from Texas and California,( like and Chop-Suey is from California, it is not from China ) the typical plate from Spain is Paella Valenciana, Caldo Gallego, and another product is Jamon Serrano,( o Iberico de Bellota ) those Senators should have taken a class in world cuisine, most of those senators are just a bunch of ignorants like the one talking about Gazpacho spy instead of Gestapo Spy, Gazpacho is a Spanish and Portuguese soup. Curiously some of them have a doctorate degree in Jurisprudence, Political Science and International Affairs
PS During WW2 many despective names were created against the Japanese, the Italian and the Germans, and many peoples repeated them without knowing where they were coming from. In a few days Japanese, Germans and Italian became enemies of the peoples
Lost in all this media coverage is any news from the pretext of the war, the DPR and LPR breakaway republics.
This Australian news story is one of the few accounts and expresses the power of propaganda fed to them

Times has a firewall..I just discovered this video from April 2014. Soon after the start of the civil war in the southeast, Ukrainian troops defect to Donbas. The nationalists have to work hard on ordinary people to turn them against one another.

Always coming with a great bunch of caveats, the website Grayzone offers a very different coverage than the mainstream media
A contribution to the discussion but it is not clear where The Grayzone is coming from. According to Wikipedia it seems to be pro-Russia, not that their point of view should not be presented.
In view of what is happening in Mariupol — water and energy cut off, food running out — the claim that the defence of the city is in the hands of neo-Nazi Azov Battalion would, if true, be disturbing. It could mean that they are making a last stand there and prepared to take the population down with them. Also disturbing is the statement from one of the Greek-speaking minority there that people are being prevented from leaving. It would also explain why the Russian forces are being so ruthless as they would would want to eliminate the Azov Battalion in particular. The only independent reference I could find on this is the Wikipedia entry on them that says Mariupol is the headquarters of the Azov Battalion.
