Putin’s latest speech, talking about denazification and full of allusions to Nazis would indicate that he has indeed lost the plot.

Re, ALB, your saying no one would be mad enough to unleash M.A.D. is problematic.

Russia will no longer be allowed to compete in this year’s Eurovision song contest

Now, that is what I call an existential sanction!!!

By ‘Nazis’ Putin means Banderites, Ukrainian integral nationalists in the tradition of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, who did indeed collaborate with the Nazis during their WW2 occupation of Ukraine and massacred plenty of Poles and Jews in Western Ukraine. In post-Soviet Ukraine they constituted the Svoboda (Freedom) Party and the Right Sector. Although a minority, they are well armed and highly motivated. They played a crucial role in overthrowing Yanukovych in 2014 and in the massacre of Russian activists in Odessa and remained a significant part of the Ukrainian forces in the civil war in the east (e.g., the Azov Battalion). By de-Nazification I expect Putin means the exclusion of Banderites from public life, prosecution for their crimes and an end to the glorification of Bandera and their other ‘heroes’.

But Zelensky is from a Jewish family.

    What massacre in Odessa?

    Zelensky is not a Banderite.

On the Odessa massacre, see https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/may/02/ukraine-dead-odessa-building-fire

When the Germans occupied those territories they were viewed as their own liberators, and when the Soviets occupied them during WW2 they killed thousands of people from those territories, therefore, Nazism can be defined based on massacres, if it is based on massacres Vladimir Putin is also a Nazi and he was also the chief of an organization of assassins known as the KGB, he wants to eliminate all kind of Russian oppositions. In Russia, there are people carrying signs which say that Puttin is a killer

The Ukrainian government is stupidly encouraging people to resist Russian tanks with rifles and Molotov cocktails. That will only get them killed and endanger other people. Most people seem to be ignoring that stupid advice and are sensibly trying to escape from the combat zones or lying low till it’s all over.

Maybe there are some sensible elements in the Ukraine government after all. Don’t know if it’s true, though. Hope so as it’s the only way to stop the killing and destruction. That’s the immediate priority from a working class point of view.

More on the possible scale of refugees

    https://www.bbc.com/news/live/world-europe-60517447

UN aid agencies are projecting that up to five million Ukrainians could flee to surrounding countries.

At least 100,000 people have already been displaced by the Russian invasion, the UN refugee agency says. Around half of them left in the last 48 hours.

Poland has said that it is willing to take up to a million Ukrainian refugees. The UN has warned that nearly three times that number could be headed just to Poland in the coming days.

As I said in an earlier post, strange isn’t it the change of attitude to those fleeing war when white and Christian
