Muslim Council of Great Britain is to launch a campaign in Parliament for fairer media coverage later. The council said there was “a serious problem” with the way the UK media reported on Islam and Muslims. It looked at more than 10,000 articles and TV clips from the last three months of 2018, and said 59% of print articles linked Muslims with negative behaviour.
The study found the Mail on Sunday had the most negative coverage of Islam, with 78% of its stories featuring Muslims having negative themes.

At one point he asked her whether RT was financed by the government to which she replied “no more than the bbc”.
That Ofcom has the power to censure and ultimately ban broadcasters for “unbalanced” reporting is an infringement of free speech of course. That wouldn’t happen even in the US where they’ve got the First Amendment (but I imagine that only applies to US citizens?).

More than 70 of roughly 90 editorial staff at Hungary’s biggest independent news outlet have resigned. “The editorial board deemed that the conditions for independent operation are no longer in place and have initiated the termination of their employment,” it said.

Amnesty International said the arrests were “designed to intimidate and send a chilling message to journalists, whistleblowers and activists who draw attention to matters of public interest in Zimbabwe”.

July 26, 2020 at 4:02 pm #205272AnonymousInactiveLike the old days during the Cold War, Moscow Radio, Tirana Radio, Peking Radio, Pravda, and Peking Review were banned from all new media and conference, they were not part of the media freedom and the free world, and in some countries, the USA forced their government to ban short wave radio to stop peoples from listening to them, and anybody found with a shortwave radio was taken to jail, and many zombies do not know that

Now Facebook is turning on the Left.

February 4, 2021 at 12:44 pm #213480alanjjohnstoneKeymasterWe have a lot of attention to the manipulation of social media, but the UK has been conducting its own control of news. First it was the Iranian Press TV, and although the Russian RT is still on air, it has been vilified.
Now the Chinese CGTN has had its license to broadcast withdrawn because the Chinese Communist Party pulls the strings.

China has banned BBC World News from broadcasting in the country, its television and radio regulator announced. China’s State Film, TV and Radio Administration said BBC World News reports about China were found to “seriously violate” broadcast guidelines, including “the requirement that news should be truthful and fair” and not “harm China’s national interests”.

This is worth a read to explain why.

A business opportunity for profits or controlling information even more?
February 25, 2021 at 8:19 am #214241ALBKeymasterThe recent dispute between Facebook and the Australian government, presented as curbing the power of the tech giants in the interests of the people, is in fact a classic case of a dispute between two sections of the capitalist class over the share-out of profits. A dispute between Tech Giants and Media Moguls (such as Rupert Murdoch). Now referred to as a “revenue sharing” scheme, it was originally billed as a “profit-sharing” one. More honest but less likely to attract public support.
Despite the unpopularity of the tech giants, the issue of no concern to workers. Why should we help the capitalist press get a bigger share of the profits at the expense of the capitalist tech giants?

Big Tech can only be countered with big power.

Big Tech has undoubtedly become too powerful and action is desperately needed. What many governments have so far failed to grasp, however, is that in dealing with a borderless, decentralized entity, the only workable solution is a multilateral one.
