I’m Grandpa, a retired teacher who worked for many years in China and SE Asia. I don’t know whether I’ll fit in here, but let’s give it a go.

I’m an ‘Old Skool’ socialist in that I believe essential public services such as public transport, the utilities and the NHS should be run by an elected government and not some Del Boy characters looking for rich pickings at the expense of everyone else.

I believe in the Beveridge Report of 1942, which outlined plans to address the ‘five giants’ of want, disease, ignorance, squalor and idleness and formed the basis for the introduction of the Welfare State between 1945 and 1951.

And why not? That we can all read and write, have access to free medical care and no one is starving to death on the streets is a welfare system that Marx would have cut off his right hand for.

I believe in dealing with the real world, not some utopian communist fantasy where eight billion people live in a wageless society, share everything and live happily ever after. It’s never going to happen. I’d rather stick with old-fashioned socialism that works in practice and which millions around the world can only dream of.
