This is true. I notice that in supermarkets here you can get a leg of serrano ham for about 90 euros although I understand these are grain-fed white pigs. The really expensive ones are the jamon ibérico, which tend to be free-range black pigs that feed on acorns in places like Extremadura and can cost anywhere from 600 to 700 euros per leg. Definitely not on the list of a proletarian diet. It’s more something that the posh people patronising places like the Corte Inglés supermarket would tend to buy….
Meat-eating proletarians tend to eat the cut-offs. Pork is comparatively cheap, cheaper than chicken or turkey, for example, and is mostly factory-farmed under appalling industrial conditions. There are about 32 million pigs in Spain, I believe
