Moderatorhttps://www.ft.com/content/b0b6ca64-29b6-11e7-9ec8-168383da43b7Don't know if you'll be able to read that.Le Pen won the youth vote (18-34 she came ahead of Melenchon at 25%, she beat Macron in 35-49 bracket, Fillon ruled the 65+ bracket).Le Pen won the poor vote, she smashed ahead of Melenchon on th <€1500bracket, beat Macron on the €1,500-€2,500 bracket, Macron edged €2,500-€3,500, and aced on those above.Le Pen won the manual labourers and salried employees (exc. managers)brackets.Another image: It looks like the working class is split between Melenchon and Le Pen, the SP has been smashed (but would be interesting to see how it's parliamentary vote holds). We seem to be looking at the failure of reformism. As some Conrynistas point out, the soft left across Europe is in ruins, whatever the faults of Corbyn, he may protect the Labour party as a force, if not as a ruling party.

Moderatorgnome wrote:Could that be because that particular thread has been locked? So if it's not a glitch then somebody with nothing better do is playing silly buggers..Well, the same applied yesterday as Mcolome1 was the last named contributor on the update screen, but there was no matching postwithin the thread for the time shown. That was before it was locked.

ModeratorApologies to mods, but just tried Vin's suggested bump method on a thread I started "In advance of summer school… " and you can see that the last post date was changed:"by Young Master Smeet 27/04/2017 – 8:42am" To the last time I updated it, since this isn't happening with the global resource thread (and in fact mcolome1 remains the listed last poster, and that user didn't initiate the thread) I think we're at home to glitch city…

ModeratorFrom what I'v seen, more of Melenchon's voters are likely to go to abstension than to Le Pen, the supporters of Fillon, who has endorsed Macron, are more likely to got o Le Pen. https://alexandreafonso.me/2017/04/19/

ModeratorAt the point of being boring, exactly: the point isn't a rock solid commitment to this or that model of agriculture, but to the principle that conscious human control freed from the logic of capital and it's anti-human incentives will be in charge.Just to put a spanner in the ethical vegan works: vat grown meat would be unacceptable to the ethical vegans if 1 cell from a living animal was ever involved in its production, from a practical point of view, it could be become a land and resource efficient way of producing nutrition.Quorn is unacceptable because it relies on eggs, but a massive upscale of micoprotein production, using marginal land to raise poultry is a viable option and would represent a substantial change in itself.

ModeratorActually, I was wrong, #32 above was posted at 10:51, I edited it, and the time now shows 11.01, so I clicked edit and saved…
Young Master Smeet
ModeratorOther forums I've been on add a note to posts when they've been edited, that doesn't seem to happen on this one.

ModeratorLbird has no evidence that the Socialist Party 'openly claims' that only an elite can determine 'truth'Lbird has no evidence that the Socialist Party keeps saying that an elite of 'Specialists' must determine their 'Speciality'?Lbird has produced no evidence that SPGB posters here have openly opposed the democratic control of production of truth, and have insisted that only an elite of 'specialists' have access to 'Truth', by using a 'politically neutral' method, which cannot allow voting by the majorityAnd the above response proves that. All Lbirds claims above are Aunt Sallies.

LBird wrote:that only an elite of 'specialists' can control physics, maths, logic, all science, and, contrary to Marx's arguments for the self-emancipation of the proletariat by democratic political methods, that 'the workers are too ignorant' and must be 'emancipated from the top down' by 'disinterested scientists'.No it doesn't, and Lbird can provide no evidence that it does.

Moderatorhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-39642992Oh, look, it's Engels. Also, note how the scientists themselves desscribe it in their abstract:
Quote:A negative effective mass can be realized in quantum systems by engineering the dispersion relation. A powerful method is provided by spin-orbit coupling, which is currently at the center of intense research efforts. Here we measure an expanding spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate whose dispersion features a region of negative effective mass. We observe a range of dynamical phenomena, including the breaking of parity and of Galilean covariance, dynamical instabilities, and self-trapping. The experimental findings are reproduced by a single-band Gross-Pitaevskii simulation, demonstrating that the emerging features—shock waves, soliton trains, self-trapping, etc.—originate from a modified dispersion. Our work also sheds new light on related phenomena in optical lattices, where the underlying periodic structure often complicates their interpretation.https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.118.155301#fulltext

Moderatorjondwhite wrote:This appears to be conflating two different things. As I understand it, the only library Socialist Standard subscriptions are public libraries. The 'commercial journal publishers increasingly becoming e-only' are academic publishers and the libraries they provide are university libraries – which in any case ignores that multiple studies show students almost always prefer print to digital; There did use to be a few academic libraries had subs, I wouldn't be surprised if they've closed them down in favour of E (for space and storage cost reasons); students may prefer print, but when they can't get access they hapily take E, and that does save a lot of cost and improve supply & access times.
Young Master Smeet
ModeratorCommercial journal publishers are increasingly becoming E-only, as are libraries, so there is a chance that libraries will begin to refuse to stock the print standard (especially as it is available free online), so at the least, looking at cutting the free subs to libraries could save a few quid.NLBs proposed amendments should be supported, as, should the resolution be passed, they would retain a print element for use in public events and for members to buy.

ModeratorThe easiest thing to do is contest the 10 we contested last time, and maybe save ourselves a few quid by not doing the mailout and relying on a general leaflet instead. That would cost us £5,000, plus the cost of a relative handful of leaflets. We could use money saved to maybe pitch for a big add in the Mirror (or similar).

On the scale of Nukes, that's nothing, a 1KT bomb would destroy everything over to the Common.
