Several of us from Swansea and Cardiff went to a meeting day in Cardiff yesterday organised by the Zeitgeist Movement. I don’t think I’m being biased if I say that the highlight was the talk given by Adam Buick on the meaning of communism/socialism. It gave rise to a fair amount of discussion – most of it interesting.
Other talks were by an organisation called ‘Positive Money’, which I don’t think many people there were convinced by and one by someone from Zeitgeist depicting the present slump as going to be the worst and most long-lasting ever. Some of it sounded pretty possible and convincing, but some of it alarmist and with a bit of conspiracy theory thrown in as well (NATO being behind the revolts in the Middle East and Africa as a way of combating Chinese influence).
The speaker from the ‘Free Food’ movement didn’t turn up. There was also a 10-minute video by the Zeitgeist founder, Peter Joseph, speaking – very good, I thought. My impression was that the people there – about 30 and mainly young – were pretty responsive to what we were saying. Cardiff Group is organising its own public meeting next month on the subject of “What is Socialism?” on Tuesday, 10th April, so hopefully a few will come.
