ParticipantCDM – “ The monastic nuns and sisters who took care of us were good women dedicated to their beliefs”
The ones that taught me were rather different.
They were generally, Small, bearded and vicious.
One had a “fragment of St Peter’s finger” (probably a chicken bone originally sold in the 14th Cerury) that we had to kiss and revere.
Catechism was beaten into you with a stick, left handed pupils were forced to use their right hand, infants were beaten with canes and rulers, etc.
In senior school many of the highly devout teachers were totally psychologically damaged. Teachers beat you up regularly, assembly involved standing for an hour, reciting novenas, rosaries and other devotional prayers. Movement or twitching resulted in bearings from our 6 foot 3, Glaswegian maniac headmaster and we were taught history only up to the reformation, as if Protestantism was a myth.
Our “houses” were More, Maine, Campion and Fisher, all Catholic martyrs from the reformation.
We were taught the facts of life, including contraception by the School priest. My mate John, at the age of 15 put his hand up in the sex education lesson and said “Father, surely if you don’t play the game, you should make up the rules?”
🤣
The priest was so gobsmacked he forgot to cane him! This waa not from private or public schools, just a normal Catholic education in the North of England.
Lots of the kids were 2nd generation immigrants from Ireland, Poland, Italy, Spain, etc. so they didn’t say anything about the violence and abuse they faced because their parents were devoted Catholics.
One of my local parish priests was moved to another parish, I later found out that there we’re allegations of sexual abuse made against him. One of the teachers we had was moved to our school because he’d been touching children in another school. The Catholic Church did little or nothing to stop the abuse of children, placing the organisation in front of the victims (a bit like the SWP).
De Valera’s Ireland is what the Catholic Church wanted, subservience, funding, control.
I find it amazing that many leftist groups idealise the Irish Revolution. It led to 70 years of working class oppression

ParticipantNow I understand your hatred for Catholicism in particular. You have good reason.

ParticipantI dislike Catholicism, but not Catholics as such.
I have a cousin who is a Catholic Monk and he’s one of the nicest people you could meet. My father was a devout Catholic, and as a man he will always be one of my heroes.
I think there’ll always be a bit of the Stockholm Syndrome for a lot of ex Catholics.
I also heard parts of the Latin Mass a few months ago and I was moved by the beauty of it (man made beauty by the way).
But I also counter balance that with things such as the Tuam Babies Scandal
