ParticipantA superb novel too about him, by Gore Vidal, Julian.
The writings of Julian’s friend Libanius have been well preserved and are published over several volumes by the Loeb Classical Library.

ParticipantI bought it from Amazon, but I have not read it yet; it is on my reading list. I have read another one from Gore Voda. He was a very controversial person in the USA

ParticipantDo you have another option than Amazon?
I use Betterworld Books, Awesome Books, Ebay, and independents if I can.August 28, 2026 at 7:29 pm #265664Thomas_More
ParticipantAnd I avoid anything that looks like it’s print on demand. I do research first into the publisher. I’m furious when I end up with a shoddy excuse for a book.

I’ve had some stick from some comrades for using Amazon to publish my book series. That’s print on demand. To my mind, it’s a bit like the debate in the Party a few years ago about investing funds
The thing is, though Amazon has a bad reputation for various (well-founded) reasons, from the point of view of a writer wanting to self-publish and not having the funds to publish, Amazon was the only realistic option. As a writer, you don’t pay anything. Although by the same token you earn very little in royalties (although that doesn’t bother me because that is not why I wrote)
However, I would reject the suggestion that the quality is poor. It’s a paperback (so you will like that), but I was very surprised by the quality of the cover and the print. Much better than I expected, and it was done by a printing firm in Italy
Sorry to be cheeky (and doing a plug LOL), but you can get some idea from the front cover of the book (vol 2), which is reproduced in this thread

ParticipantThanks, and fair enough. This isn’t the thread for this, but I’ll just reply.
I have ordered books in good faith and ended up receiving photocopied sheets glued together, badly photocopied illustrations barely visible, curling covers, no pagination, text alternating with blank pages, mispellings, unreadable grammar and orthography, etc.
One Mark Twain had GOOD QUALITY BOOK printed on the cover like a bad joke. It was thinner than a copy of The Beano but marketed as a book.
A p.o.d. on the English Civil War had a cover scene from the Napoleonic Wars. Several supposed books on De Sade had Rousseau on the cover! The blurbs on the back are illiterate.
If this is the future for print, I’ll stay out of it.
I now check the date of a book before I order. Prior to the year 2000 if I can get one.August 28, 2026 at 9:18 pm #265668Thomas_More
ParticipantThis departure from the thread is my fault. Can we veer the debate on book quality back to the “Paper” thread?

ParticipantSince archaeology has proven with solid evidence that the Exodus never took place and the Hebrews were never in Egypt as slaves,
Originally, they were polytheists and worshipped the Canaanite gods, and monotheism was imposed on them by the monotheistic priests; Yahweh was a god invented by the scribes of the Bible, written for the Hebrew tribes
Moses never existed and never wrote the Pentateuch, and Joshua never existed, and Jacob too; there is no evidence of Solomon, and the big kingdom of Israel never existed; it was a small kingdom,
Yavehov was defeated by all the pagans gods, proving that he was not a powerful god as mentioned in the Bible, and it is not a universal god; it is the same one as Allah and other pagans gods
The whole narrative about the Bible and the Old Testament falls apart, and the narrative of the promised land has been completely wiped out too,
If the Old Testament is fake, the narrative of Jesus, the gospel, the narrative of the apostles, and Revelation is also mythology, and Paul was just a liar.

ParticipantYahweh was the god of storms, just one of the pantheon. He was subject to El, whose wife he stole. Now, was that wife (Asherah) his own mother (incest), or did El have a former wife?

ParticipantIn the Adam and Eve apocrypha, written by Christians later, God forgot to give them digestive tracts. So when they ate the fruit they couldn’t digest or excrete it and were in agony. God puts them to sleep and installs intestines in them.
I have a compilation of these Jewish Christian stories of the first and second centuries CE.-

It’s mythology anyway. Is there a name for “fake mythology”😀
Was “Paul” a liar, or was he deranged? If Jesus was to him, as some have claimed, a celestial being and not an historical one, then Paul only believed in a celestial Jesus. He does not use the word born, in Jesus’ case, but made, and this distinction is literally maintained by translators up until current ones. Historicity was not created until the Gospel writers, after Paul.

ParticipantAnd Adam’s first wife was Lilith, so he’d been going a long time without defecation, since he was already with Eve by the time he got intestines.

ParticipantEven in ancient times the ignorance of the Jews and Christians, their ignorance of nature and natural processes, must have been glaring to the Hellenist Romans and Greeks.

ParticipantThe 2,000 year old religion of John the Baptist still exists, and its devotees have always hated Christianity.

The socialist party has proven the case for religion, and Marx said that religion will continue to exist within human society because the original condition that motivated religion to emerge in our society still exists, and religion is the expression of oppressed human beings.
The case of religion and Jesus has been proven already in this thread; there is enough archaeological evidence that proves the mythological origins of all religions and the non-existence of jesus, to dig into small details will not resolve the problems of religion, and they are mythological too.
I rest my case. I will continue working in the real objective world
