From Vincent O"On April 7th Tony and I travelled to Birmingham for the meeting. Stephen S, our new member was present at the pub. However, Tony was having some problems with ’flu symptoms. At the time, his condition did not improve and so, we decided to leave the meeting and return home. Tony had given me a lift to Birmingham in his car. We later found out the Jon Kennedy had not turned up at the pub, anyway!!In spite of this, we will probably remain in touch with Communist Corresponding Society. Tony’s condition has improved, incidentally. In addition, there is the Midlands Discussion Forum. At a previous meeting, we have met several of its members at the “Briar Rose” pub in Birmingham, which is our normal meeting place. We had a some interesting discussions with its members about the way to socialism: the use of parliament, etc. Phil Barnes, one of the members of the MDF asked us about our attitude towards workers councils. This led to an exchange of ideas and thoughts about the Russian Revolution. Tony and I expressed the vital importance of democratic, majority understanding to achieve socialism. Phil Barnes appeared quite receptive to some of our ideas and I think that further discussion with him would be worthwhile. However, he is visiting Australia for several weeks. When he returns, we will contact him again."
