From a piece in yesterday's Times about the Middlesex Appeal Tribunal's archives which have been digitalised:

    Quote:
Another man was less fortunate, coming up against a judge who was prejudiced against his political beliefs. Harry George Ward appealed against conscription on "conscientious grounds based on his socialist beliefs". His appeal was dismissed, with the judge claiming that "as a socialist he could not possibly have a conscience".
Records at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission show that a Henry George Ward, possibly the same man, died in July 1916 and was buried in the British Cemetery at Pozières, near the site of the Battle of the Somme.

Poor sod. Wonder if he was one of ours?
