Financial Investment: Gladiators required heavy investments in housing, food, and medical care. It seems like only yesterday that people were up in arms about the formation of the Premier League and how greedy business types were going to over-commercialise football. How tame that all seems now.
Still, what with Teflon Man’s lackeys supporting him and UEFA still threatening to boycott the next world cup (not that they will), it’s all highly entertaining. Bread and circuses indeed.
Must go and watch my local League 2 club while it’s still reasonably affordable.There is a new book out by Michael Calvin called ‘1966 A Moment in Time’ exploring the background to the 1966 World Cup held in England. The skulduggery that went on behind the scenes before, during and after, with dirty deeds galore by many of the nations taking part, was mind-boggling, but there again no doubt typical of any major sporting event. There were complaints of corruption in Fifa and biased refereeing and some of the countries involved could barely tolerate one another.
Sound familiar? The attitude of the English FA to the North Korean team was almost as bad as that of the US to the Iranians in this year’s competition. Anyone who thinks that sport and politics can be separated is in a dream world.
