Since the football is currently capturing the minds of millions, we should talk about it. For example, I’ve just enjoyed Cabo Verde on the verge of doing one to a dictatorship. Of course football is partisan, but when I see an African nation stand its ground against a colonial nation, it feels good. I hope we can all agree with me. It’s not socialism but we can share the joy.

Paula – ‘Since the football is currently capturing the minds of millions,…’
That’s the problem – mass distraction using tribalism. We should expose it for what it is, not indulge it.

Sports and entertainment they are capitalist commodities used to distract the working class from the real social problem, to promote nationalism, national identity, division among the workers, national fanatics, bread and circuses like during the time of the roman empire. These articles were written by a participant in this forum about sports and specially football

    Deportes y el capitalismo

    Sports and bourgoise nationalism

It hs been scientifically proven by neurologist that American football has destroyed the lives of many youngsters , and it has produced suicides and mental disorders, it will not be eliminated despite the disovery because it is a business that produces billions of dollars

The capitalist class and the left-wingers are trying to use the Super Bowl as a cultural rebellion, but in reality it is promoting bourgeoisie nationalism, and national prides, the greatness of the nation state.

The global expansion of capitalism is practically eliminating the nation state as the president of Colombia said at the United Nations, and wars are killing peoples, in our time, the capitalist class is not longer hiding their real intentions, they are using the gunboat diplomacy.

The so called auto determination of the nations promoted by these nationalist sports, and the united nations it is toilet paper for the capitalist class, they do not care about these legal illusions, and those conceptions must be denounced and must exposed by the socialists

I worked as a waiter during a former world cup, and one said, “After we beat Spain (football), we’ll beat the Argies (war).” The two things were one to him.

If you support any side in international sports, then you wave a national flag.

    Nationalism, the Enemy of Socialism

    Nationalism the enemy of socialism

    Away with all national flags!

    Away with all national flags

In Mexico and Argentina football is like a human battle, something peoples try to kill each others, it is like following a religion. Restaurants only shows sports the whole days, it is the attractions used by business owners to bring customers and to drink alcohols, everybody carrying a flag, it is pure commodity and bourgoise propaganda while the real social issues are hidden

Here in Britain too. They wear flags, and fights break out.

Baseball ( and softball ) used to be a week end entertainment in the poor neighborhoods, and family gatherings, but now big sports business take those poor young athletes to produce profits for them, they give them expensive contracts, expensive mansions and expensive cars, and then they get involved in drugs and many end up in prisons and several of them have killed women, and the owners of those big sport business hire expensive lawyers for them, in a few days they are out of jail. Peoples think that thru baseball they are promoting the pride of the nation, but it is all business mixed with nationalism and patriotism

Can we surmise what sports and entertainments a socialist society would enjoy?

TM – Sports are fine as long as we don’t export the infantile pleasure we get from them into the real world of economics and politics. Of course there won’t be any ‘international’ sports competitions because there won’t be any nations. I quite like the idea that opposing teams will represent different styles and tactics – which, of course, happens now in sports like cricket and football – The ‘West Indies’ play a very different kind of game than do Australia and England as do Brazil in football. It would be a clash of cultures, techniques and bragging rights – all for fun.

Much the same, surely, but within a very different kind of social setting. Nothing wrong with a football match, though I prefer rugby myself (hailing from South Africa, we didn’t have much of a tradition of football back then when I was a kid LOL).

    —————————————-

Baseball was originally played by the Tainos, and the Yankees turned it into a profitable business and nationalised it

In a socialist society, we are going to have many things that exist in a capitalist society, but the approach is going to be different without a profit motive
