    I love reading 18th century primary source adventure novels. The heroes and heroines frequently complain of poverty, but never consider wage-slavery but as an option worse than death. They will bewail along the lines of: “Were I not saved soon, I would have had no choice but to seek a position.”
    Fortunately, something intervenes at the last moment to rescue them from such a fate.

    Penniless aristocrats and over-rich bourgeois are a common theme in these novels. So are “yobs” and muggers who are aristocrats, picking on members of the bourgeoisie.😀
