After the Clarion Cycling Club, another institution that was part of the working class movement in the board sense is changing.
Ruskin College in Oxford is being taken over by an ordinary university and is unlikely to continue to be a centre of Trade Union education that it was set up to be and was for over a century. The press statement announcing the merger makes no reference to as its origin and history. A sign no doubt of the shape of things to come, just any old adult education centre.
Scotland’s very much smaller cousin, Newbattle Abbey, was deprived of state subsidy some years ago and now survives from hand to mouth through a council grant.
More on what happened here. Financial mismanagement seems to have a lot to do with it. Quite a few Party members went there.
