It has been mentioned on many threads that the US is gradually losing the knee-jerk reaction to socialism. But sadly this article highlights just how confused political commentators are about what socialism actually stands for.

While we now welcome that the new attitude provides an arena for discussion, we are not able to compete with the loud voice of the reformists who seek half a loaf instead of the bakery.

Another article in the similar strand  which is reduced to the same palliative demands and economic  misconceptions. http://www.countercurrents.org/weiner020114.htm

Of course, when workers stop supporting capitalism, you will find the ruling class willing to offer all sorts of previously "impossible" "unrealistic" concessions to workers considering supporting socialism. Rich menus of reforms will be offered aplenty. The bargain will be offered in exchange for supporting capitalism. If workers can resisting equating reforms in a class society with emancipation under socialism, then whether the reforms are taken or not, the support for emancipation under socialism will persist. A party unwilling to compromise such as the SPGB seems the best vehicle to do this.

I still say it's a good thing that "socialism" is no longer a dirty word even if it is not being used properly. Given our approach and the language we use it can only be to our benefit if words like "socialism", "capitalism" and "revolution" are coming back into political circulation after they were mockingly dismissed by capitalist ideologues following the collapse of the Russian state capitalist empire twenty or so years ago.

The term 'world communism' is no longer strictly associated with global domination of the Soviet Union.

The worst thing that ever  happened to socialism-communism  was the emerge of the Soviet Union. Probably, in some way Hugo Chavez did like Robert Owen, the word socialism was known and propagated again, even, that it was presented in a distorted manner, because after 1989 the propaganda was that socialism had died in Berlin and Moscow
