If you have the proper software, it can be printed by chapters and then turned into a spiral book ( or 3-hole binder). A student with limited financial resources would be forced to buy a used book ( probably an old edition ) or a digital book.

I prefer to have a paper book in my hands and take notes from a paper book. Even more, for most books that I read, I have a notebook, but when paper books are not available, I buy the digital ones, and I print them, and they are transformed into paper books, and I send them to a friend who owns a bookbinding company, or I turn them into a spiral book with hard cardboard backing. They last for many years; the place where I keep my books and notebooks is fumigated, not dusty, fireproof and clean, and I have bookshelves; it has fluorescent lamps. Inside the house or inside a garage, they get insects.
In Spain, they have kept all their literature and novels from their golden age in paper book format; they are classical books. In secondary school, we had a class in literature, and we were motivated to memorise the names of the books, the authors and a summary of the literature books. It was Eugenio Maria de Hostos pedagogue system. When I bought them, they were very cheap; now they are very expensive. They still look like new because they have vinyl plastic covers. It is a real enjoyment to read classical literature, novels, poetry and drama

We can download some free books from the internet; they can be exported in PDF format, and they can be printed on a laser printer. It is much better because the size is 8 x 12, and they have bigger fonts and better paper quality; without ink, they use toner.
Kindle or Nook have a very small screen, and the iPad or Samsung tablets have a bigger screen, and they have colour images (Retina display, HD) for textbooks, but they are very expensive, and the battery charge only lasts a few hours; Kindle lasts for more than a month. Some phone companies sell them with internet connections.
