So, let me get this straight. If I were to write down a song’s lyrics while listening to it on a CD, I would be breaking the law?

And the lyric website: ‘A-Z Lyrics’, pays royalties for EACH of the THOUSANDS of songs it has published?

Here’s something more upbeat: Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival

(It’s used in Vietnam War films a lot)

The lyrics, provided by A-Z Lyrics: https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/creedenceclearwaterrevival/fortunateson.html

Short answer, yes, but you’re unlikely to get caught, but copyright is literally an exclusive monopoly of the making of copies of any work of art. Likely, lyric websites pay a licence to an agency, and in return report page impressions so that the fee they pay can be distributed pro rata (and they themselves raise revenue by advertising). It might be pennies per creator, but that’s more than they’d get otherwise.

Obviously, we’re unlikely to get caught, but the risk for us would be selective litigation with political motivation. We can say, with some justice, we have a rule against copyright material, and we can show we enforce it, so anything that slips through can be corrected.

The law of copyright is very complex and it requires the proper knowledge. You can record music using a standalone CD recorder or tape recorder from streaming music ( like Tidal, Qobuz, Apple, Amazon, etc ) but only for personal use, you can not sell it or share it. It is called intelectual property and there is a hornbook that explains everything about it

This clip has nothing whatever to do with music. Although comically we hear Burt Bacharach “This Guy’s in Love with you” used as underscore. I was astonished to see my Uncle Jack being briefly interviewed at 3:55…
This was filmed before the drink transformed him from something almost raffish into an old alkie. He took me to see Star Wars when I was 8. I got sweeties while he addled his way to the Death Star wae a bag of cans.
Just a fascinating snapshot of the days when it was very much a man’s world in Glesga boozers…

As I’m going away for an extended period (don’t all cheer at once!) I thought I’d leave you with a little upbeat something.

Select full screen and ramp up the volume… 🙂

Don’t worry, you’re not as important than you think you are😂😂

At the risk of offending a touchy, thin-skinned moderator, this thread – sort of sing-a-long-a-socialism is it?

    “Age restricted?”

Bastard sell outs. For all that, worth a click.

Isn’t he the bloke who emasculated the Internatuonale with the message “Then comrades come rally and let us all vote Labour”?

In the Arts, it can be hard to separate the performances/work produced by individuals who you wouldn’t want to know personally from the enjoyment derived from the work itself. ‘Cancelling’ someone might produce a virtuous moral glow but it can also be a cutting of your nose to spite your face. Not a Bragg fan but he did write A New England performed excellently by Kirsty McColl, who, in contrast to Bragg, I do love. Here’s a marmite example. I don’t like marmite but I don’t mind this.
