Bit of a gamble maybe….
It could be a shrewd move or he could sink even deeper into the brown stuff
Looks like the only opponent might be Count Bin Face.
Given that Farage only got 46% at the last election and that the bookies have Bin Face at 20-1, is the smart money amongst the anti reform vote in Clacton start to pile money on Bin Face, then vote for him giving both Farage and Ladbrokes with egg on his face?
Anything to be gained from standing a SPGB candidate here when there are no mainstream pro-capitalism parties standing (other than Nigel Facade’s Reform)? Other candidates are currently Lawrence Fox for The Reclaim Party (who has a controversial history see https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-67009045 ), Rejoin EU, Monster Raving Loony Party, and Binface.
The anti Farage vote seems to be centering around Count Bin face, which has now got the slogan “Bin c*nt face”

I would endorse what Max suggests. There aren´t many occasions when spending money to cover a lost deposit is justified, but this seems to be one of them. It is likely to be quite a high-profile event, and if there are not even the usual Trot organisations standing to misrepresent the term “socialism”, it might encourage greater curiosity and interest in what the SPGB itself stands for.
Presumably, the EC would need to act quickly to get the ball rolling in this case if the SPGB wants to contest this by election.
One other thing. I remember seeing a party Facebook post yesterday, which I think mentioned that Farage´s decision to force a by-election would cost the UK 200,000 quid. We need to be a bit careful about how we phrase this, as I believe the Reform Party has offered to foot this entire bill.
They must have anticipated this particular criticism of Farage´s opportunist manoeuvrings being wheeled out by his opponents….
Personally think it would be a huge mistake.
It would be seen for what it is as being opportunistic, which is what it would be.
We need to show a bit more integrity than that.
Also it would possibly be seen as an attempt to throw a life belt to Farage when he’s managed to urinate on his French fries in such a spectacular way.
We, in my opinion, should steer well clear and let the good ship Reform sink into a mire of their own creation
We can’t anyway in view of this 2006 Conference Resolution:
“That no more by-elections be contested as they appear to be a waste of money.”
The resolution mentions a waste of money but an additional reason was being beaten by what are now being called “novelty” candidates. In one case, by both Screaming Lord Sutch and Mr.Blobby:
