ParticipantHere are two safer spaces descriptions in 2016
From the Jeremy Corbyn campaign
Quote:This leadership election must have at its heart a debate about the future direction of our Party and country, and should be an example to all of vibrant political discussion.
As a candidate I will treat all with respect, behave with civility and expect all who support me to do the same.
All Labour Party members and supporters should conduct themselves with a high standard of behaviour. This debate is about politics, not personalities, and personal abuse of any nature will not be accepted.
There should be no personal hostility and nobody should feel intimidated at any time. So no foul or abusive language will be tolerated and all candidates should be listened to with courtesy and respect at hustings, meetings and events.
In particular, there should be no demonstrations or protests targeting any individual candidate or outside any MP’s office or surgery – and no personal heckling of any candidate at any hustings, meeting or event.
The personal and family life of each candidate should be respected, and I will do everything I can to ensure that the private lives of candidates and their families are protected from public intrusion. I expect everyone in the Labour Party to do the same.
There will be no tolerance of abuse on social media. All candidates should ensure that anyone who acts in an abusive way on social media is referred to the Party for investigation.
We celebrate the diversity of our Party as a place where sexist, racist, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, homophobic, or other discriminatory or offensive abuse, has no place.
We expect a high standard of debate in this leadership election and look forward to discussing what the people of this country need; how Labour can be re-elected; and what the next Labour government’s priorities should be: both to address the huge injustices around us and to rebuild Britain economically, ensuring that all parts of the country generate and share in its wealth.
Quote:Olympia Zine Fest is a safer space, which means that we intend to create a welcoming environment where folks can let their freak flags fly. Participants and attendees should be aware of how their words and actions affect others, and strive towards mutual respect.
Advocates for Youth describes a safe space as:
“A place where anyone can relax and be fully self-expressed, without fear of being made to feel uncomfortable, unwelcome, or unsafe on account of biological sex, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, cultural background, age, or physical or mental ability; a place where the rules guard each person’s self-respect and dignity and strongly encourage everyone to respect others.”
Follow these guidelines to help make Olympia Zine Fest a safer space
Inquire about and respect the physical and emotional boundaries of others.
Be responsible and accountable for your words and actions, be aware that intent is not magical.
Always get explicit verbal consent before touching anyone or taking anyone’s photo.
Respect peoples’ differing opinions, beliefs, points of view and states of being.
The following are prohibited and will not be tolerated:
Racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, ableism, transphobia, queerphobia, ageism, sizeism, religious intolerance and all other forms of discrimination.
Sexual harassment, inappropriate/unwelcome comments/behaviors.
Disrespectful or disruptive behavior.
Theft of money or property, squatting at empty tables.
Physical, verbal, mental abuse or intimidation.
Causing a participant or attendee to feel distressed or unsafe.
Content of participants of Olympia Zine Fest is not pre-screened or censored prior to the event, nor can we promise to preemptively mute any oppressive or problematic behaviors by participants or attendees. If individuals find certain materials to be oppressive or problematic, or if you witness or experience prohibited language or behaviors, OZF’s organizers encourage you to reach out to us to investigate and take proper action. OZF reserves the right to ask anyone in violation of the safer space policy to reconcile their behavior or be asked to leave. Thank you for your support and assistance in making OZF a safer space.
Not sure about 'classism'. What does that mean? Likewise is heckling really so unforgivable? Although i find it hard to imagine refusal to facilitate sexism, racism and homophobia in a meeting of a party opposed to those is as serious a threat to free expression as others might suggest.
