“You can’t prove there’s no God.”
“No. I guess you have to take it on faith.”

A book from a free book alcove was filled with sticky post-its from an angry reader. Each one had handwriting on it, mouthing off.
Now, as soon as someone these days tears into the Catholic Church (I mean explicitly the CATHOLIC Church) I know immediately that he or she is a conspiraloon, a creationist, fundamentalist evangelical, Freemason-hating, Protocols of Zion-crusading, fanatic. Sure enough, so this was too.

The time for bashing the Catholic Church was when the rationalist Enlightenment philosophers were doing it. The only would-be bashers of Rome today are the 100% IRRATIONAL conspiraloons – who hate Voltaire too. (He was a Mason đŸ˜±, oooh!)

True. But when one says “The Catholic Church is the spawn of Satan, the Antichrist!” then one knows immediately that one is dealing with a born-again fanatic/conspiraloon.

    Letter sent to various academics.

    EVIDENCE FOR AN HISTORICAL JESUS?

The two main non-Christian sources that Christians use to say Jesus existed are Josephus (proven to be an interpolation) and Tacitus (who is simply repeating what the Christians in Rome were shouting about, not confirming any fact in it). So those can both be dismissed.

Annoyingly, online and other sources continue to quote these two “testimonies” in proof of Jesus’ historical existence, even non-Christian and atheist academics. Why?

With Joshua being a popular name at the time (as now), and with innumerable rebels against the Jewish establishment tending over many decades to congregate, armed, at the Mount of Olives, it is highly likely that the figure of Jesus would be a composite, invented three decades after his supposed execution, of many such, violent and armed, persons, as Karl Kautsky explains. The peace-teaching Jesus, however, has left nothing, apart from Christians telling stories about such a person, after thirty years of total silence about any such man, and without a word either from any Roman or Jew.

So what is the evidence for Jesus?

Robin Lane Fox’s PAGANS AND CHRISTIANS is an excellent social history of how Christianity rose, changed and expanded up until Constantine.

I like it when he says he used to go to church but then he grew up.

    That’s my favourite part.

Goodness Gracious Me did a similar sketch. Christian caller, Hindu family.

“You’ve only got one God? That’s awful. Want one or two of ours?”
