Hi IkeJust a quick addendum about “races”.I assume your main criteria for wanting to divide the world’s population into “races” is that you think their “intelligence”, or “IQ”, varies – and that you are not really interested in any other traits?Whereas I think there is a biological dimension to intelligence, I think it is extremely difficult to figure out exactly how biology and the environment interact to influence general intelligence. Geneticists suspect that lots of genes are involved.Also, do you really believe that these possible “IQ” genes are in any way linked to the genes for skin and eye colour? It just does not add up. “White” Europeans vary on the IQ scale the same as anyone else – at the two extremes there are the few with very high and very low IQs (most people cluster in the middle) – they are all “white”, it’s not as if the lower the IQ of Europeans, the more tanned their skin colour. The whole thought experiment gets very silly.Finally, why is high “IQ” so important to many people anyway, as opposed to, say, just reasonable “IQ” and a good dollop of empathy?Jimmy Saville by all accounts was a member of Mensa; highly intelligent, devious, deceptive and manipulative. Some interesting figures from today's Independent:"Does migration hurt Europe?Economically, it is a boon: an IMF report on Wednesday said EU states that take in the most people will get the biggest windfall – worth an extra 1.1 per cent growth in Austria, Germany, and Sweden by 2020. Migrants may also fill the demographic shortfall from Europe’s shrinking population. The EU’s active labour force of 240 million would fall to 207 million by 2050, even if migration runs at the present level. Yes, I agree, and a good blog.I was surprised, though, at the predicted decline of Europe's active labour force, even with migration running at the present level.If that's the case, Europe isn't as "full" as some people would have us think……
