To be properly classed as halal meat, the animal has to be bled to death while a blessing is spoken by a Muslim?

I agree Adam.I don't think criticism of halal meat is because of any "Islamophobia", but I can imagine a scenario whereby it becomes another issue used against Muslims by the right wing. Another, Sharia law by the back door, scapegoat scenario.
i do recall some years ago that the Le Pen National Front in France (publically supported by Brigitte Bardot) and also taken up by the NF in the UK embarked upon a campaign for animal rights highlighting halal. Of course, their concerns were not animal welfare but aimed at immigrants and it was indeed islamophobic in intention. Of course, when some advocates of vegetarianism list adherents one particular person is frequently ignored…Adolf Hitler.

Today's Times reports this under the headline "Eat goat, say Hindu nationalists as beef is banned in Mumbai". Apparently they are owners who refuse to rent property to those who eat beef. That's a new one "No Irish. No Blacks. No Beefeaters".
I think we have to be careful…the ban on beef is political and nationalistic, nothing to do with animal welfare…it is aimed very much at Muslims by Hindutvas in control of that state…just as the right endeavoured to use halal slaughter as a means of attacking immgrants here in the UK and in France. I have seen some sad cases of suffering cows that cannot be put down by a vet due to religious custom.I have seen suffering dogs in Buddhist temples too where they have been neglected and not properly cared for. Karma…they call it i believe…
