Spotted this in todays Daily Mail, missing out all the pictures of Queen…royals ad nauseam..
QUESTION Did Karl Marx’s mother tell him to accumulate capital instead of writing about it?

So it’s true. I always assumed that it was something made up by some anti-socialist journalist trying to be witty.
Interesting that Marx should write of his mother calling him “Karell” which is the Dutch equivalent of the German Karl ( and English and French Charles). She did in fact come from Holland. So I suppose Marx might have been eligible for a Dutch passport. One of his sisters went to live in South Africa where I imagine knowing Dutch might have been useful.
That is not on volume 31, it is on volume 43 from International Publisher, and Lawrence and Wishart ( Mega edition ) and it was in a letter that Marx wrote to Engels and other friends but it is more of a joke than anything else, and he referred it to Engels several times and he even shortened the expression mother. Marx did not depend on Engels for everything he used to write articles for a newspapers in the USA

PS Volume 31 was an edition made by Progress Publisher, and the Institute of Marxism Leninism of Moscow. Most of the letters of Marx and Engels are included in the last volumes of the new edition and they are going to be rearranged on the new MEGA edition of 132 volumes.
