The internet age has been vaunted as an “information explosion.” In reality, though, “dumbing down” and appalling ignorance of basic facts is on the increase, so much so that former school subjects like basic history and geography are now specialist, minority subjects (just watch any popular quiz show).
What does this bode for the future, where our hopes for socialist revolution lie with the generation(s) to come?You don’t watch Richard Ozman’s House of Games? When they have to point to countries on a map, or give an historical date … (and I mean, entire centuries out!)
Many people travel to countries but have no idea where those countries are, even though they’ve been to them!
I can’t open Youtube because there isn’t space on my phone. But I do watch The Chase.

Maybe people just appear dumber because there are so many quiz shows on air now to expose their ignorance.
I have two grandchildren at primary school and they do history and geography. I wouldn’t be surprised if they know as much as I did at their age.
