Whoever was responsible for erecting the monument, which I personally don’t regard as a “monstrosity”, is largely irrelevant. What we should be emphasising is that what took place under the Bolsheviks had nothing whatever to do with Marx or Socialism.
And as a spokesman for the Friends of Highgate Cemetary said:
“Regardless of what anyone thinks about Marx’s philosophy I just think it is an appalling thing to do. On a human level this is a grave of his wife, his own grave and other members of his family.”
He added: “This is no way to treat a Grade I-listed monument and it’s a particularly inarticulate form of political protest.”
