This is what Eyüp Muhçu, the head of the body that represents architects in Turkey, said to the BBC on the subject of the recent earthquakes.
“The priority of the central government was not to make the cities safe, but to implement some projects that were solely planned for maximising profits. For this reason, 65% of the current building stock in Turkey is risky. And no measures have been implemented regarding these risky structures.”
Never was it more literally true to say that profit kills. As long as capitalism lasts, the rich win while the poor pay, and avoidable tragedies like the Turkey/Syria earthquakes will recur, in which blind greed turns a natural event or an accident into a deadly catastrophe.
