If you describe it as 'doomed', surely that is not a great leap from 'futile'.

Stuart, I have some sympathy with that view. I don't have any William Morris books to burn,  tho' I do have Brand's Revolution and I would recommend it.

recommend reading it or burning it?

Actually, people should watch this. In it he virtually says that he was misled into getting involved and saying vote Labour. It's only about 5 minutes and you can see his cat.

It sounds like he's renouncing political action about 3 minutes in – 'the only currency we have is compassion and being nice to each other'.

Not only have Labour not been victorious, expect 'socialism' and these 'socialists' in the Labour party to get the blame. Double disaster for their campaign. Time for the Blairites to recycle accusations of the longest suicide note in history and all the old criticisms of Michael Foot in the 1980s.

    Report back

    Quote:
Thursday’s debate on “How should the left vote in the election?”, at Goldsmiths University, was attended by about 45 people. Jill Mountford, AWL, put forward the case for the Socialist Campaign for a Labour Victory, debating Paul Callanan of the Socialist Party and TUSC and Andrea Carey of Green Left. Such debates are much rarer on the left than they should be. There should be more of them, combined with more unity in action and campaigns. We think the meeting clarified some of the differences between class-struggle socialism and the left-wing liberalism of the Green Party, as well as our differences with TUSC. We objected to TUSC not mentioning migrant rights at all in its election material.

If banks can create money out of thin air, then I would like to start a bank and bankroll myself. I have no reserves but that shouldn't matter. I might even bankroll the SPGB to contest every constituency at the next general election.

If you want more crumbs, why not vote for the party that promises you more crumbs?

The comments here have been most interesting and revealing – angry, sentimental, all about identification with an ideological position, moralising. I have some sympathy with all that has been said. But deciding who to vote for at an election just isn't a decision with the moral force and political consequence you have all invested it with. It's a purely practical matter – of no great significance, and yet of some significance. I totally agree with Brand. I vote Labour at least partly for all those people desperately hoping for a slightly less evil government, one more committed to keeping the social safety net. For myself, the election will probably have little or not effect. I'm not so sure that will be true for my friends and acquaintances and many others who have suffered so terribly at the hands of this Tory government. I applaud Brand for his decision and hope it had an effect on his followers.

I don't despise those who vote Labour, but the purely non-sentimental tactical reason for voting socialist is so socialists are in better position to contest the next election not a worse position because Labour claim a renewed democratic mandate to govern. How else have existing minor parties become major players this time around? Not because 'other people voted for what they believed in' but because you vote for what you believe in.
