Were all these gains from the Lib Dems? Of course as Bristol has an elected mayor the council is pretty powerless, but aren't the Bristol Greens well in with the Independent mayor (even though he was caught speeding at 30mph on one of their favoured 20 mph roads)?.
Clifton was a gain from the Tories (if you know Clifton you'll know that was a good result!), Easton and Windmill Hill were gains from Labour and the rest from LD.Ferguson's an interesting character – Although an ex-Lib Dem I think the Greens support him on a number of things he's introduced, mainly relating to traffic and transport. Beyond that I'm not aware that they're that supportive of him although they did vote against that vote of no confidence in him a while back.
I see that Tory Surrey County Council is going to hold a referendum on this issue of raising council tax to help fund social care:http://news.sky.com/story/surrey-to-hold-referendum-on-15-council-tax-rise-to-fund-social-care-10734359The result will be interesting. I wonder which way individual socialists would/should vote (and we do have some in Surrey)? Another referendum dilermma.
I think there's a better case for abstaining from the referendum in Surrey than on the question 'Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?' The referendum in Surrey is an almost textbook example of the sort of 'political trading' to which we have always been opposed. And the phrasing of the EU membership referendum could probably have allowed socialists to vote 'no' on a semantic point.Having said that, claiming 'there are no working class interests at stake' was a poor formulation when used for the EU referendum and would be even worse in the Surrey referendum. Higher taxes would almost certainly get a different amount of crumbs, and its only being proposed because they expect Surrey voters won't vote for higher taxes and it will strengthen their mandate to cut services.
