Following the recent electoral activity in Brighton, interest has been shown in organising a meeting at which an introduction to The Socialist Party would be given, hopefully leading to the formation of a discussion group or even a branch in the area.

Plans are well under way to find a suitable venue and we already have a nucleus of members and others interesting in participating in such a venture.  However, as the Secretary of Kent & Sussex branch I'd be interested to hear of anyone else living in the area who may also wish to be involved.

This meeting even surpassed my expectations.  22 people present (7 members and 15 visitors)  At least four others who had RSVP'd did not attend.  9 new contacts have been added to the branch's mailing list which now stands at 114.With chairs arranged in a circular formation everyone present took turns to briefly introduce themselves and state the reasons why they had come to the meeting.  A very informal and affable discussion period then took up the remaining time.It was fairly unanimously agreed to hold similar discussions on the third Tuesday of each month, at least for the forseeable future; the next one taking place on Tuesday, 21 July at 7.30pm with an end time of 9.30pm.  The same venue and room have already been booked. One non-member who attended has already booked to go to Summer School.

Good stuff.  I like the idea of a circle and introduction by attendees.  Use that in Swansea when the time comes.

Well done to all involved. More results like this and, you never know, my optimism for the future, may well be restored.Keep the momentum up, comrades

BTW, was there any conclusions reached or common ground apparent from the reasons offered by the visitors for their attendance?I like the idea that we ourselves also get answers from our meetings.

Up to half the visitors present had family members or friends who were either party members or knew of the party. Five more were contacts on the K&S mailing list.  Others had become aware of the party as a result of its electoral activity.  None had attended a socialist meeting before.Three new members in the area who have joined over the past five months were unable to attend.

Following the unmitigated success of the introductory meeting in Brighton earlier this week it was decided by an overwhelming majority of the 22 people present to hold regular meetings on the third Tuesday of each month for the forseeable future. The next one will be on Tuesday, 21 July at the Brighthelm Community Centre (Activities Hall), North Road, Brighton BN1 1YD.  Start time will be 7.30pm.  We have to vacate the room by 9.30pm.  Brighton rail station is about 4 minutes walk and buses to nearby coastal towns and elsewhere run until quite late.

Pleased to report that so far two of the visitors who came to the meeting in Brighton last Tuesday have booked to attend Summer School.
