I haven’t paid much attention to TZM for a couple of years and I found this video helpful for getting a better idea of what they are and are not about, so as to avoid using strawman arguments against them at the debate next Saturday. thought others may also find this useful as well.

Please don’t go on Saturday, Ed, or anyone else for that matter; it’s Sunday 22nd July   http://www.worldsocialism.org/spgb/event/whats-wrong-present-economic-system-and-how-get-society-where-money-isnt-needed

Nothing like turning up early to be sure of being at the head of the queue. GT

There might well be a queue. I saw the Zeitgeist organiser yesterday and he said they were expecting about 30 of their people to turn up and the room only holds a maximum of 60.  Tea is supplied but you might need to bring your own biscuits.

Bear in mind also that they (TZM) have over 800 members of their Meetup group compared with our 77 and at least 18 of them have RSVP’d for Sunday compared with our miserable 5, three of whom I’ll be bringing!   Fucking pathetic and some members wonder where we’re going wrong………..

I think this will have more to do with the difference in average age of us and them, with them having the lower average age and so being more internet-savvy.

I was meant to be coming down this morning but I won’t be able to attend tomorrow’s event now. I had booked an early flght for 7am leaving from Glasgow but was still wide awake by 3am and just could not sleep. The thought of getting up at 5am to get the bus to the airport, fly down, get the train from Luton into London, get a tube from London up to North Finchley then get the Bus from there to my mates house was too much for me. The flight only cost me £60 return so haven’t lost that much. Would have loved to have been there but it can’t be helped now!. Cheers Ray

That may be partly the case but that begs the obvious question – why the difference in average age?  Perhaps we’ll find the answer to that one tomorrow. The other factor appears to be a difference in the level of commitment but that again is probably related to them having a lower average age.Frankly we need more younger folk (it’s true we’ve had an influx of members under 40 recently) like Nicholas Alexander Cook in Canada for example.  He posts some great stuff on a number of lists such as ‘Harper has to GO!’http://www.facebook.com/groups/241515679290822/Other contributions welcome nevertheless.

I think part of the answer is that we are stuck with using terminology that has been dirtied by over a century of abuse by leftists of various kinds. But I don’t see any easy answer to this problem. The second factor has got to be that our use of new media has been pretty feeble. It’s been less than 12 months that we’ve had a website that’s fit for purpose. (incidentally I’ve been working on a soon to be revealed update for the worlsocialism.org site recently)The audience for conspiracy type films on the internet is huge, and this is where the bulk of Zeitgeist viewers come from. But I don’t think there are any magic solutions…

The reason the party does not attract more people and younger people than it does is a distinct cultural tradition reflected in attitudes among members broadly along the lines of rejecting scientific research in marketing and communication techniques over the last half century. NOT just using new media which I actually think the party has been pretty good at, but the way in which these are used. This is part of a broader problem that the party has with culture and “distractions from the case”. Also a low level of party education among members seems to compound this and be a result of it.But also stuff like holding the workshop for exploiting dissatisfaction within capitalism on the same day as the TUC march.

I guess this is where AIDA comes in!
