Labour are in trouble for not delivering \u2018growth\u2019. But given that the planet is being consumed and the climate turned upside down by ever-increasing growth, why doesn\u2019t political success lie with \u2018no-growth\u2019 policies?<\/p>\n
Because capitalism needs \u2018growth\u2019 to deliver profit for that small percentage who own most of the planet\u2019s wealth. Yet scientific research<\/a> shows we can already produce enough to provide a comfortable living standard for everyone on the planet without overburdening the world\u2019s ecosystem. <\/p>\n But this could only be implemented within a system of common ownership and democratic control of the world\u2019s resources with production geared to meet needs not profit. As the futurologist William Gibson said: \u2018The future is already here.
