{"id":255888,"date":"2024-12-25T10:30:13","date_gmt":"2024-12-25T10:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldsocialism.org\/spgb\/?post_type=snippet&#038;p=255888"},"modified":"2024-12-23T17:45:47","modified_gmt":"2024-12-23T17:45:47","slug":"bare-necessities","status":"publish","type":"snippet","link":"https:\/\/www.worldsocialism.org\/spgb\/snippet\/bare-necessities\/","title":{"rendered":"Bare necessities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/refed.org\/stakeholders\/retailers\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a food waste non-profit group<\/a>, in 2023 food retailers in the US &#8216;generated 4.45M tons of surplus food, nearly 35% of which went to landfill or was incinerated as waste.&#8217; That 35% works out at around 9 lbs (4 kg) of food per person in America. With food prices sky high and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.feedingamerica.org\/hunger-in-america\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">47 million Americans facing hunger, including 1 in 5 children<\/a>, destroying food &#8216;surpluses&#8217; could be regarded as a crime against humanity.<\/p>\n<p>Yet today&#8217;s food industry exists not to provide food but to make a profit. US retailers do give away some surplus to charity, but they destroy far more to keep prices high.
