{"id":248527,"date":"2023-11-22T10:18:16","date_gmt":"2023-11-22T10:18:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldsocialism.org\/spgb\/?post_type=snippet&#038;p=248527"},"modified":"2023-11-22T10:18:16","modified_gmt":"2023-11-22T10:18:16","slug":"new-sign-of-poverty","status":"publish","type":"snippet","link":"https:\/\/www.worldsocialism.org\/spgb\/snippet\/new-sign-of-poverty\/","title":{"rendered":"New sign of poverty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It has become common recently to talk of a \u2018cost-of-living crisis\u2019 in the UK and elsewhere, as people\u2019s incomes struggle to keep up with price increases. <\/p>\n<p>A dramatic example of this is the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2023\/nov\/14\/millions-of-uk-households-forced-to-unplug-fridge-to-cope-with-rising-bills\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Autumn Statement from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation<\/a> that two million households in Britain have in recent months turned off their fridge or freezer in order to save energy and money. And a quarter of low-income households have run up debts to pay for food, while a third sold belongings to raise cash.<\/p>\n<p>This in the fifth richest country in the world (measured by total household wealth)!
