War in Ukraine<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Russian Federation has launched a full-scale attack upon Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The\tWorld Socialist Movement<\/strong><\/span> is not concerned with the so-called rights and wrongs of this war, whether the niceties of international law were breached or if the sovereignty of Ukraine was disregarded. As workers, we are painfully aware that it will be fellow workers who will pay the blood price of the geo-political games played out by the Great Powers.<\/p>\n

Ukraine isn\u2019t the \u201cdemocracy\u201d that Western politicians and media like to give the impression it is. In fact, the political and economic superstructure of Ukraine is not very much different from that of Russia. So the argument that it is \u201cdemocratic\u201d while Russia isn\u2019t and that \u201cwe\u201d must support it to defend \u201cdemocratic values\u201d is false.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The trouble for our fellow workers living in Eastern Europe is that history has dealt them a bad hand \u2014 no choice but to be dominated either by the EU-US or by Russia. For the governments of either side, people in Ukraine are pawns to use to further their interests. Not a drop of working people\u2019s blood should be shed<\/strong><\/span> in supporting either side of this capitalist conflict of which bloc can claim territory as part of its sphere of influence. Whether it is the Ukrainian nation or the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, it is not worth the sacrifice of our fellow workers\u2019 lives.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The\tWSM<\/strong><\/span> condemns the attitude of all those prepared to see towns and cities littered with the corpses of men, women and children. For what? To fight for or against what would be in the main merely a change of rulers, with each side sacrificing our Ukrainian fellow workers and Russian Donbas fellow workers for such spurious claims as acting for \u201cdemocracy\u201d and \u201cfreedom\u201d. The WSM issues our declaration of peace.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
