    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jun/01/coronavirus-libertarian-right-profit-coronavirus-pandemic

“The loose attachments that investors feel towards this or that nation will grow even looser as capital becomes more mobile, and a sorting process will separate the productive few nations from the malingering many. States that don’t fall in line with the demands of this investor class will be starved by the voluntary expatriation of the wealthy, with their assets and abilities in tow.
If you assume this is merely a pessimistic vision, you’d be wrong. In fact it accords with a long-cultivated ideology that Srinivasan shares with a group of like-minded venture capitalists and entrepreneurs who subscribe to variations of the radical libertarian philosophy known as “anarcho-capitalism”. The idea at its root is that a wealthy class of investors and entrepreneurs should be free to exit nation states and form new communities whose members can choose which rules (and tax laws) they’re governed by – as if those rules were products on a store shelf.”

While Sweden reflects on its approach that ” led to too many deaths”

Did lockdown succeed. This article says yes

How the Great Lockdown Saved Lives

“…despite its enormous short-term economic costs, has saved hundreds of thousands of lives…”

An interesting read on the State and COVID-19

    https://critisticuffs.org/texts/love-of-the-state-in-the-time-of-covid

“We only have to look at how little enforcement has been necessary to mobilise people to follow the official guidelines to understand how productive a popular mandate is.”

    Did lockdowns work?

    Yes according to this study

Lockdowns have saved more than three million lives from coronavirus in Europe, a study estimates. The team at Imperial College London said the “death toll would have been huge” without lockdown.

The jury is still out as we don’t know yet whether or not there will be a second wave in those states that pursued a more or less strict lockdown, but it is looking as if the herd immunity policy pursued by the Swedish government on the advice their own mad professor has resulted in more deaths per person than in other states:

    https://www.bostonherald.com/2020/06/08/sweden-backtracks-on-its-low-pain-coronavirus-plan/amp/

In any event, the admirers of the Swedish government’s approach have gone silent.

Yes these are real people in these damn statistics. I got news at the beginning of May of a bloke who had no problems apart from early onset dementia, who was moved into a care home for his own good and died within weeks.

Meanwhile, sport is making a comeback, driven of course by the money machine. The richer the clubs, the quicker they are coming back while the poorer ones will struggle. Football League 1 is at loggerheads over whether to continue or call it a day. The social distancing measures clubs have to obey are almost laughable. Footballers can celebrate goals by touching elbows. And on televised matches there will be the option of synthetic crowd noise.

Would it happen in a sane society?

Direct cash transfers to households: the Bank of England’s response to COVID-19 and the end of orthodoxy

I don’t know which thread is the most appropriate for this. It covers a number of areas of interest to us.

With the Bank of England likely to announce a further £200bn of monetary economic stimulus soon to combat the economic impact of the coronavirus crisis, Caroline Bentham argues they should think carefully about what they do with the money. She makes the case for a different design of central bank monetary stimulus – direct money transfers to households – and explains how this would work.

Prof John Drury, a member of a subgroup to the government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), said evidence shows that rather than mass panic or selfishness in times of emergency, people actually tend to show solidarity and cooperation.
