What freedom do workers have? To go to a park, a bar, or a restaurant to get sick and infect other human beings it is not freedom. The rich are one having the real freedom when they can sail in a yacht for several months enjoying their life with music, wines, scotch, brandy, women, and party, by the meantime workers, are forced to go to work to surviveMay 20, 2020 at 1:14 pm #202689
Interesting article by George Monbiot, no great fan of his, but interesting numbers.May 23, 2020 at 10:44 am #202786
Article in the Independent which is pretty depressing, in terms of human intelligence:
These same people who are worried that Bill Gates will be able to track where they are are probably the same people who regularly and without coercion update their facebook and twitter pages with details of where they are, what they are doing, who they are doing it with, what they are having to eat (complete with picture), who they are shagging, who they would like to shag, when they are having a dump (sometimes, unfortunately, complete with picture) along with details and pictures of all of the members of their family and their friends (and usually a whole lot of people who they are pretending to be friends with for the sake of facebook).
Quite why Bill Gates would go to all of this trouble to find out information which they are happy to give away freely, is beyond my comprehension.
It’s a bit like all of this worry about the coronavirus tracking app. If you are worried that someone is going to find out you are shagging your boss’s wife, leave your phone at home when you are shagging her (or get her to leave her’s at home if you’re doing it at your house). But don’t worry too much because one of you is bound to have put it on facebook or twitter anyway!
On the Marxist Animalist debate, judging by this survey, if we are the smartest, most advanced, cleverest animal on the planet, the rest of the animals must be absolutely as thick as pig shit. No wonder the aliens don’t come, I bet they are steering a wide course around this place.May 23, 2020 at 1:59 pm #202800
The Mormons have the biggest bank of personal data, which they have been collecting for many years before Facebook, Twitter and the Internet. The book written by Snowden shows that every citizen in the USA is under surveillance, it is worst than the Gestapo and the KGB. The chip is already in peoples minds with the widespread of the bourgeoise ideology and the support of all those right-wingers conspiracist theoriesMay 25, 2020 at 10:54 pm #202934
Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said that health workers would soon get hefty pay increases as part of an overhaul of France’s hospital system in response to the coronavirus crisis.
“I can say without any ambiguity, the increase will be significant,” Philippe said. Philippe promised “massive investments” as well as “radical changes” that could include new rules on working hours and scheduling to ensure that healthcare workers remain motivated despite the strains of their jobs.
The government said that all staff working in public hospitals and nursing homes in the regions hardest hit by the virus will get a 1,500-euro ($1,632) bonus from the state.
Meantime, employees of a major group of French nursing homes took part in protests across France to call for better pay amid the coronavirus crisis.
While similar “generosity” may happen here in the UK for NHS workers, i’m fairly confident it will not extend to the low-paid staff of privately run for profit care-homes who have suffered the brunt of fatalities from COVID-19.
In fact when the new immigration rules kick in, many care-home workers will be kicked out.May 26, 2020 at 10:15 am #202944robbo203Participant
This should clinch the argument that the virus scare is overblown and basically just a conspiracy to assert ruling class hegemony (I can think of far more effective ways of doing that than closing down businesses and running up huge financial losses)
“Number of excess deaths in UK since coronavirus outbreak began nears 60,000
Tuesday’s figures from the Office for National Statistics, showing 53,960 excess deaths in England and Wales between March 21 and May 15 2020, follow figures last week showing the equivalent numbers for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The National Records of Scotland found there were 4,434 excess deaths in Scotland between March 23 and May 17, while the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency put the figure for Northern Ireland at 834 excess deaths between March 21 and May 15.
Together, this means the total number of excess deaths in the UK across this period now stands at 59,228.
All figures are based on death registrations.”May 27, 2020 at 12:16 am #203008

Security forces in Argentina have cordoned off one of the country’s poorest slums, preventing inhabitants from entering or leaving the neighbourhood after a surge of coronavirus cases. Police officers erected barriers at the entrance to Villa Azul on the outskirts of Buenos Aires on Monday.
Who said coronavirus was not class war camouflaged? (rhetorical question)
From the horses mouth
“The first thing the pandemic has taught us, is that we live in an unfair country – and no one has the excuse of saying they didn’t know because we’ve all seen it,” said the country’s president, Alberto Fernández, in a speech about the situation in the country’s slums.
“It looks like we are creating ghettoes for poor people,” said a junior minister for social development, Daniel Menéndez.May 27, 2020 at 11:40 pm #203073
“The forgotten C”
Cancer is going undiagnosed for up to 2,000 people a week due to Covid-19 concerns in hospitals and GP surgeries, with a charity warning the UK now faces a “ticking time bomb”…putting off cancer surgery for three months could lead to almost 5,000 excess deaths in England alone…May 28, 2020 at 9:18 am #203094

And in Brazil, the government is supported by the Evangelicals, and they run the Bolsonaro election campaign, like Donald Trump he is god chosen oneMay 30, 2020 at 11:51 am #203272MutualAidParticipant
And remember their role in Guatemala in the 1980s.
With the burning of the Amazon, the virus is helping with the extermination of the native people. All of this suits Bolsonaro. But, as with Trump, his rule could be undermined if and when his own supporters start to die. Do you think so?May 30, 2020 at 6:14 pm #203290

Someone from India has sent HO this account of what happened in Bombay during an outbreak of the plague there in 1897, which might give some idea of what might have happened if the government had done nothing and simply let the current pandemic rip — workers following their instincts and leaving the city so creating a labour shortage and employers increasing wages for those left in a bid to keep production going
“Bombay, India in 1897 was a port city of 800,000. Eighty thousand workers in cotton mills, majority being spinning mills for export of yarn to China.Bubonic plague in Bombay. In December 96 alone 1,271 deaths. By end-January, half of the population fled the city. Ten thousand deaths due to the plague. The bosses doubled the wages, daily payments instead of monthly wages, and daily bonus to run the factories. But by March 1897, weaving was completely shut down and of the over two million spindles only 65,000 were working. The plague subsided in May and workers returned to the factories. Spurt of the plague during monsoons. And the plague continued but workers started taking it as one more fatal disease like T.B. In India deaths due to TB in 2018 were 4,40,000 and in the world 1.5 million. The plague in Bombay affected the labouring population in 1897. The bosses were not affected by the plague and went all out to run the factories.”
