We often say that the world needs to establish socialism before it’s too late, but what do we mean by too late? Climate change could create untold devastation, but it’s not likely to wipe out the human species and besides, we’ve seen capitalism adapt before. Do we really think that capitalism is going to destroy the world, or is this more of a rhetorical device? Should we be threatening doom anyway, given that this can lead to fatalism and depression? If ‘too late’ is a real cut-off point, what does it look like, where is it, and how do we know we haven’t already passed it?
